My husband and I have been going to Mexico ever since our honeymoon in 1981. For our 25th Anniversary, we took a trip to Tulum, approximately two hours south of Cancun and stayed at Dreams in Tulum.

The plane trip from Lynchburg to Cancun takes less than four hours, getting through the airport in Mexico is usually quick and then we take the shuttle to our resort. Tulum is further south than Playa Del Carmen and there isn't as much to do. But a new airport is planned for the Tulum area and more building is taking place. We enjoyed the Dreams resort, the people and the food.

One of our favorite things to do when we're in Mexico is to visit local ruins and there are some a few minutes south of the resort in Tulum.

Of course we use common sense when traveling, but I feel perfectly safe in Mexico. We love the country so much that we go back twice a year; once with the kids to Puerto Vallarta and for our anniversary, to Playa Del Carmen.

Debbie, these are beautiful. The only place I've been to in Mexico is Costa Maya which is a tourist trap built by the cruis ships! We hardly want to get off the boat...but this looks lovely.

Liz, I think it depends on where you go. We also stay at resorts where everything is catered to you, those all inclusives will spoil you! Thanks for commenting.

Frank and Sharon, we aren't cruise people, though my mother is, she's been on three in the last year. We're too impatient we hit the ground running and get out and explore. We even take the local bus. Mexico is just laid back and relaxing for us. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks Sharon! The children contribute to the family income in Mexico through dance or selling homemade items like belts or purses. These children were adorable.

Debbie

great photos!   hey, you have not come down here yet this year have you?? I am looking very forward in meeting you in person,  even if just for a shrimp taco and bucket of beer!!   But those shots are great....some very exciting things going in down here on the coast.  I wanted to steal you away about an hour to chat some business with you while you are in town.   Did you know the just put some night lighting  for a night light show on the Tulum pyramids...wow if they looked incredible with the caribbean water behind backdrop, imagine what they look like now under all those stars... you do need to leave yourself an evening to visit this next time you are in town.

very good...mark me down on your calendar!

cheers

Thomas, we would love to meet up with you! We are coming down the third or fourth week in April, staying at Playacar. I'll have to check with my husband on the dates. We would love to see what's going on in Tulum, we both love the area. Thank YOU!

Cindy, this was our first trip to the Mexican Riviera and we loved it. The resort was large, a lot of walking, but when everything is included, you'd better be doing some walking or you'll definitely gain weight. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Robert, the contact info for DREAMS IN TULUM is http://www.dreamsresorts.com/dretu/

We joined PALACE RESORTS and that is where we go in the spring http://palaceresorts.com/

Playacar in Playa Del Carmen is my favorite resort. It's small, but centrally located, close to the ferry to Cozumel, 45 minutes to Cancun. You don't need a car here.

Hey Robert,

I am down here in Playa del Carmen and Tulum.  If there is anything I can help you with don't hesitate on giving me a call or email.  As Debbie mentioned above, there are a variety of places up and down the coast.  ecological friendly (no electric) right on the coast on Tulum beaches, all inclusive places where you have everything you could dream about right at your door, or even high plush areas.  I was invited at the beginning of the week to Banyan Tree Hotel Resorts (they are selling some villas )  wow.... that is at the high end of the entire coast and probably in all of Mexico.  What I remember about the Banyan Tree tour is a RAIN FOREST WALK for the sensations..(i don't get into these 5 senses type of experiences) but the way they introduced the "massage and experience"  it gets my curiosity rolling.  I know my wife would be all over that...  http://www.topmexicorealestate.com/blog/2009/02/25/banyan-tree-mexico-prepares-for-the-mayakoba-pga-golf-tournament/   (they even have a person on staff dedicated to   ROMANCE SPECIALIST......)   can you imagine that?? they will help you administer a romantic evening for anniversaries, special occasions etc.... dining on the beach, dining on a boat...anyway that is one that is fresh on my mind because of my tour couple days ago,  but I also have many buddies who have bought condos and are renting them out.  I can put you in contact with these too if you need any help.   cheers.

Hi Thomas, I'm going to forward this to Robert just in case he doesn't check back. How close is Banyon Tree to Play Del Carmen?  I checked our reservations and we'll be at Playacar from April 21-28. Thanks for sharing the info.

Debbie,

howdy.

I am just getting back from Mayakoba right now, there is a PGA golf tournament going on right now...fantastic afternoon.  Banyon Tree is located inside of the Mayakoba golf resort community.  They are about 5-10 minutes north of Playa del Carmen.  Inside you have the choice of Fairmont Hotel or the Banyon Tree,  Banyon Tree is just opening up their doors in about 10 days.  If you dont stay at the hotel, it is definitely worth a visit to one of the restaurants to go in and see the golf course, the canals, and the beaches.    the players today actually had to play around iguanas on the course....and we actually saw  an alligator swimming in the waters,  golfers had quite a chuckle.  talk later....great news that you are coming down!! looking very forward on meeting you in person.

ps...hey how do you get your picture to appear on these comments? (ha ha)

Great photos Debbie!  Mexico is my favorite places to vacation!  I just got back from a few days in Cancun and had a fabulous time.  The weather was gorgeous (in mid-January!) and the water was warm.  The ocean is absolutely breathtaking.  I've been to Chichen-Itza and it is definitely a must-see (now one of the Seven Wonders of the World).  Mexico is easy to get to from California and very inexpensive for airfare, hotels and food.  I've made myself a promise to go at least once a year from now on.
