Valentine's Day Humbug!

By
Real Estate Agent with RLAH@properties AB95346

The summer after my sophomore year in college, I got a job gluing bows, feathers and hearts onto greeting cards at the Hallmark Card factory in Topeka, Kansas.  And it was sweltering - no air conditioning.  And this was summer in Kansas, where triple digit temperatures were common!

And most of that summer, I was working on Valentine cards.  They were cutesy and fuzzy and heartsy.  There were cloyingly sweet verses and lots of flowers and all that.  And at the end of the day, I'd be soaked in sweat and covered with bits of fuzz and glitter that probably are in my lungs till this day.  Remember, this was a long time ago before it occurred to anyone to invent a face mask.

Under the watchful eye of the company time and motion engineer, we would glue on whatever was required at lightening speed - there were quotas to meet each hour, although I can't recall being paid a bonus for meeting or exceeding the magic number.

By the time I quit in early September, I'd had it with greeting cards - particularly those meant to be exchanged on February 14th!

So what's love got to do with it?  For me, absolutely nothing.  While I'm an otherwise good girlfriend, I'm a Valentine's Day Grinch!

Well, I might get Willy the Labradoodle a heart-shaped doggie cookie!

Crowded restaurants, chocolates that are sometimes a surprise-some are good and some are not, greeting cards that are supposed to mean something on that day-what about the other 364 days?

I'm not a big fan either.  I outgrew it.

So sorry, but I know what you mean.  I think working in any kind of factory would do that to you.  I spent a summer working in a paint brush factory.  I can appreciate a good paint brush!

I've never been a huge fan of Valentine's Day anyway.  We do the card thing and this time we even did gifts because my husband bought me Obama pajamas but other than that its just another day in this house.  Sorry for the traumatic Hallmark memory :)

LOL, that's how I feel about coffee.  I used to live in an area where when the wind blew just right you could smell the Nescafe.

Yuck.

I really hate that smell.

kk

P.S. I love chocolate.

Patricia - it was a nasty job, but somebody had to do it. when you think back to the your sweat and toil, try to remember all the happy hearts you helped create. sometimes we get so lost in the process, we don't realize the end result. how many good memories were created in your sweat. so thank you...from all that love cards and thoughts and emotions they carry......you did not labor in vain...........

LOL...so glad to hear someone else is "over it". I'm married now for 24+ years and I certainly don't need a day to "celebrate" that....I already have it, it's called my Anniversary!  I think Willy deserves two cookies!!

No airconditioning?!!!  In a Kansas summer?!  Phew!  No thanks!  And hourly quotas?!  Yikes!  I had no idea that stuff was done by hand either.  Hope you get lots of love from your no longer hyper-active Labradoodle!

How about flowers?  They smell nice. But I get the idea.  I not overly sentimental myself but I got flowers this year (tulips) and Jan went bonkers.  Who knew?

Pat... and this helped pave your way into real estate, right?  You can at least make cards for your clients.. lol   Besides, this wasn't that long ago, right?

On another note, are you and Audrey still planning on coming up this week?  Did your friend confirm if he is going to NYC?

Hi Pat... ask anyone who has ever worked in a florist shop on Valentine's Day and I am sure that they will echo your sentiments.

I wonder if you would feel the same way about chocolates if you worked in a chocolate factory. I know I would not.

Pat - While I do love him, I did not even get my boyfriend a card for Valentine's Day - I took him out to breakfast instead! That was it - breakfast out - and a sweet day together.
