Top Real Estate Professionals are Like Great Chess Masters

When we sell real estate we utilize many of the same skills of a tournament chess player.  We combine strategy and tactics.

In both activities you need to develop a plan and continuously create opportunities for success.

  • To succeed in chess you need to study and train.  We learn from experiences of past masters.
  • In real estate you need to fine your skills, study your market and develop a plan.

Each real estate transaction has its own set of complications and challenges.  They can come up on their own or as a result of someone not doing what they should have.  As Realtors we expect and react to problems on a regular basis.

Hula QueenIn chess your opponent creates challenges and complications for you.  To win at chess you have to anticipate potential complications, prepare for them and react appropriately.

To succeed in real estate we need to have a plan.

  • Build a marketing strategy, education plan, and develop the strategies for providing your customer service.  If you are a true real estate professional nothing happens accidentally.
  • In chess you learn openings, basic strategies and tactics for each phase of the game.  During the game you need to continuously make and adjust your plan.

A great game of chess is like a thing of beauty.  Like a piece of art, it is something that people for many years will admire and learn from.

Sold SignA real estate transaction, in the hands of a true professional is can resemble a great work of art.  It is a thing of beauty and the equivalent of a classic chess game.

There is one major difference between chess and real estate.

  • In a perfectly executed game of chess there can be only one winner.
  • In real estate if done well everyone can win.

P.S. I forgot to mention:  I am President of the Hawaii Chess Federation and a pretty good Realtor.  I am sure my chess training was a contributor.

Chess is the greatest board game! It teaches you skills of patience, critical thinking, analyzing difficulties and coming to a strategic resolution by think of many possible outcomes. These skills not only help us in real estate but many other areas. Thank you for the analogies.

Abraham - I teach chess to children.  It gives them needed analytical thinking skills that most schools seem to not teach well.

To date, I have never had the pleasure/honor of learning the game of chess.  I've been told I may be half-way decent at it if I gave it the old college try.  Seems like a good analogy you use Randy and I think I'm missing the boat until I learn how to play the part of something other than the pawn:-)

Randy--My sons' were asked by their middle school math teacher to be a part of the chess club in 6th grade. He would select students to be part of the afterschool group because he loved the game and wants pass it onto the videogame generation. Both of my boys have learned to think more strategically from playing. Wonderful game and great analogy! Good post!

Teri - Thank you.

Chess made a huge difference for me growing up.  Math and Science were always easy for me.  I am convinced that is because I was a chess player.
