Brown Deer Park located at the corner of Glendale, Brown Deer & Milwaukee has been a favorite place of mine, since I was a child! One of the finest gems in the Crown of the Milwaukee County Park System, Brown Deer Park has something to please everyone. This year, 2009, the park will be celebrating it's 75th Anniversary.
Since 1934 , Brown Deer Park's 18 hole golf course has been the scene for the US Bank Open championship on the PGA tour. Originally named the Greater Milwaukee Open, the tournament was the proud host to the launching of a golf icon: Tiger Woods. In 1996 Tiger made his professional debut here and it was "Hello World"....This challenging course is one of the few public courses on the PGA tour. It is a treat for a golfer to get a tee time on the Monday after the tournament.
The gorgeous golf course is a feast for the eyes with manicured fairways and greens, and off season it is a snowshoe and skiiers delight.
The Lagoon is the scene for fishing, feeding the ducks, and in winter skating. Check out this video from the 40's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbKFAhYdCPY Now this is skating!
Hiking trails abound through the woods, where you might even see some deer. Several of the Picnic Areas also have soccer fields, and on some weekends you can even see some cricket or rugby being played. There are tennis courts, Frisbee golf and tons of walkers. In years gone by, there was a velodrome for cyclists.
If you are looking to host a party, aside from renting a picnic area, two great buildings are available for rentals. The club house at the golf course featuring a bar, large seating area and a roaring fireplace is great for larger parties. The Boat House is my favorite, overlooking the lagoon and a large lawn just at the edge of the woods. Another kitchen and fireplace make this a hit for smaller parties. Downstairs is the warming rooms for skating.
Come check it out if you've never been to Brown Deer Park before. I guarantee you will love it. My favorite time is right after a fresh snow. It is truly gorgeous.
