Recently I have been plagued with a pop up every time I click on any one of my posts.  At first I thought it was Activerain...there you go assuming right?

It's not Activerain but one of my beloved widgets!  I am truly sad!

After thorough investigation.and ignoring my husband I had to call the boys in Seattle..the news was broken to me it's probably one of your widgets..deep down I knew this...because there was a brief period where I did not have this widget..you might remember!

So after a few days of removing my background...and all my other widgets...one by one...and still living in denial...I reconfigured my globe.

I have found...its my geovisite globe....and every time I logged back in...that darn pop up would appear again..

I had to decide...should I keep my geoglobe and listen to the complaints and possibly lose readers? or lose the visual and keep my readers because if it were me..I'd worry about spyware...virus's and malware and worms..dang could all the nasty stuff on the web..get any creepier?

So I did some research..and it was blamed on virus's and spyware in IE. (FALSE) maybe back then but not for me!  It doesn't matter what browser I use that darn pop up is popping up everywhere!

My computer is going through surgery right now...and my husband reformatted my computer..not because of a virus..because I cannot use my microphone.

So I logged in last night and sure enough that darn pop up popped up once again even with clean Windows and new Internet browsers!

I logged off and I went to bed!

Tomorrow I will bury that globe!

This morning I am on my husbands computer...I decided to try it here to be sure...and the pop up surfaced..and it was time to face reality.

I have to give it one more shot so instead I looked it up again..still the same answers...As I thought about it...its just like so many others who try to gain the google juice..but to me it might be a chance for someone to generate extra income!

Sometimes FREE versions of online tools has a pricetag and not always in your benefit...

The Globe must go!  And its gone...and so is that darn pop up...OK one last shot....I have to admit I'm going to miss that globe....I gotta talk to those fellas over there you never know...they may not even know!

Ah poor Midori ! Had to part ways with the globe huh !!! ... I know it can hurt :o)

It's true though, that many freebie tools can really can come with such baggage that it's not worth the benefit.

... now what was the url of that "Love Compatibility Calculator" again ????

;o)

Cheers !

Midori- I am so glad it is gone :)  This reminded me of Liz's Post....she had something that just screamed at you, scared me several times cuz the computer would just do it's own thing.  Anyway you are so right, FREE does have some type of price tag.

Thanks for the advice about widgets, I was thinking of adding one, but will rethink it.

Boy, now there's food for thought. I don't use a bunch of widgets because I want my pages to load faster. I've gone to a few sites and had music suddenly blare through the speakers waking up my kids 2AM in the morning. I hate those things...

Midori- sometimes less can be more. A streamlined page with great content means so much more to me than the latest and greatest widgets loaded on the sidebar.  The globe you had was very cool though! =) I hope that we all remember that we do not own the widgets we install and that at anytime they might change on us.

Best,

Scott Cowan

Midori -  Yes these little widget guys can have some insidious thingy's in them. Be careful everybody and follow the guidelines that Brad set up a few months back. I'm not even sure if all my widgets are ok. I'm gonna have to go back in there to check them out. Thanks for posting Midori.

Hope it's warming up down there.:-)

My kids are continually having problems with their computers. I can't convince the that freebies aren't necessarily "free".

Midori, I feel for you.  Except my problem is Vista.  It hates add-ons including my beloved Stumble Upon.

Call me crazy, but I decided early on to go "widget free".

Unless they are forced by AR, I don't have them.  I want speed, speed, speed and widgets, colored background and stuff just slow things down.

I love the look and functionality of many of the widgets available.  But, after having one drag the crap out of my primary blog, I decided that I was going to limit myself to just the best...  They all suck something out of the load times and that could lose readers, too.

I am glad you dumped it too. Pretty maybe but often times slow to load. You really won't miss it.

Hi Midori, I really have wanted to add widgets, but didn't want to sacrifice speed for my readers. Thanks for the warning. I guess that I'll remain widget free!
