Remember your high school days when it was okay to jump in the car with a bunch of friends and go cruising? Gas was cheap. Burgers, fries, and a milkshake at the local Sonic were cheap. Mom and dad thought you were at a friend's house studying for tomorrow's math test.

In most cities here in California, cruising is now against the law for various reasons. You decide whether or not they are valid:

  • It wastes gas.
  • It creates sound pollution with the head-banging stereo systems.
  • It's a public nuisance.
  • It creates traffic concerns.

I think this law is stupid, but then again, I think about gangs....so who knows.  I like your other ideas though....those places sound like fun.....REAL FUN!

Sounds like fun and brings back very good memories. It is a shame so many things we were able to enjoy as teens are no longer "good for you" or as you noted against the law, what kind of memories will the kids of today have?  What an apt graphic for your post "sourberry" what the goverment is doing all today.

I was just talking to my husband about this the other night...we were in downtown Sacramento and remembering when cruising was the big thing.  It has been outlawed here also and probably for good reason.  We have several car clubs here also and have attended on a couple of evenings with my inlaws.  We had a great time!

If I had the gas that I used in a 57 Bel Aire (283 4 barrel w/glass packs) cruising the Frisch's I could make a couple of trips to see you and you marketing guru.

Oh yeah, playing the Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. - not quite the same as the present icons.

Hi Jim - We used to call it "tooling" and we would tool through the Bob's Big Boy parking lot so slowly that it took about an hour to get from one end to the other, with people climbing in and out of cars and visiting.  It was our favorite hangout.  Of course, it extended up and down Van Nuys Blvd. too.  The "grownups" got mad at our holding up traffic.

Jim,

Car lovers need places to gather and cruise.  A few people have made it bad for those who just want to go out and have a good time.  We have a few "unoficial cruise sites here in NJ".

Have a great day

Are you kidding?  How can they legislate something like that?  Are there cruising police?  If you get pulled over do you have to show them your shopping list or to-do list?  lol

Hi Jim, fun, fun post.  I grew up in Southern California and cruising was the thing. I went with my older brother, I'm sure, rather, I know he hated it but I don't ever remember having to walk home.  I have an older El Camino I use for my faux finishing studio and she is always the belle of the ball at the construction sites. Happy and surprising to know it is still alive and well for those who are so inclined!

Hey Jim, cleaver topic for a blog.  We used to have a place in Tomball that would do antique car get togethers but I think they stopped.
