Just a little Nostalgia......

There was a time before some of you were even a twinkle in mom and dads eye, a time when you could go and get a sandwich and coke or cup of coffee for well under a dollar.

There was this store by the name of F.W. Woolworths that you could go into and not only buy a few things but you could also sit around the counter and order breakfast or lunch, mostly lunch.

Some may remember Woolworths as the first five and dime store, I know that I do.  This was a weekly event in our family.  We would always jump into the car and take a ride to downtown San Antonio and walk the main street, window shopping, visit the Alamo and other sites maybe even take in a movie, under a quarter with popcorn and a drink.  Then we would end up at Woolworths to have a little lunch.  Would you like something from the menu?

Enjoy your meal.....

William,

You are so right sir.  Everything except the groceries could be found at Woolworths.

Gary,

Do you remember the red vinyl covering on those round stools?  And the older the store the more cracked they would be.  :-))

That's pretty amazing to me, but then I was never a twinkle in my parents eye, I was more like surprising and unexpected news.

We had a big Woolworths in our downtown and it was a big deal for us to come into town and shop at Woolworths.

Don - I remember one of my first cases.  It was a land lease that the Woolworths or its successors was still paying rent on.  It was pretty interesting given that the store had been closed for some 40 years.  I was always amazed by that fact.  Woolworths, when it closed downtown, had some great deals and I remember buying 2 years of Christmas presents as the store was being liquidated.  The lunch counter was long gone by then.  Now, here's the interesting thing - Woolworths refocussed its retail strategy on sporting goods and eventually became Footlocker.

Terry,

Isn't it amazing how we have moved from those simple things and allowed the more hetic lifestyle to come in and change things.  How soon we forget the simple lifestyle.

Ryan,

I did not know that Woolworths evolved into Footlocker.  I wish they would bring back the lunch counter and the old prices.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Hi Don!  OMG!  I can't believe that you actually have that menu!  How COOL is that and yes, unfortunately, I do remember Woolworths and I remember the counter there--it was the COOLEST place to have a malt and visit with your friends!

Gone are those days though--we have the big WalMart but, no 'lunch counters' in our area stores.  Somehow it just wouldn't be the same even if they did--life is much more fast-paced now and prices are certainly ALOT higher!

Have a wonderful week my friend!  (OH, and I STILL haven't bought that book yet!  I am SOO far behind in my reading!)

Good morning Debe,

They had some of the best malts in the world, now we have those machine made things.  Don't worry ma'am you will get caught up and then you will have plenty of time to read.

I have eaten at the Woolworth... I've also been to the San Antonio locations (mid to late '70s)... oh, the times were so simple.

Chuck,

They were much simplier times back then.  It is a shame that we can't go back to them but then the question is "Who would go back to them?"

We had a Woolworths in downtown Charleston until about 10 years ago, but if feels like yesterday!!  They still had the fountain drinks that you could get!  There still are a few places like it, but now we have those big chain stores mostly..hmmmm It is nice to think about a place where everyone is not on thier cell phones texting!!

Good evening Jamie,

It is very nice to think about a time when you could sit and just talk with someone and not have a fear of being disturbed by a ringing cell phone.  I need a malt!!!

Hi Don - Good memories Woolworth's brings.  When I was young, working in downtown Montreal, my Mom and I would sometimes go to Woolworths for lunch....sit at the counter...discuss Mother/Daughter things (now I have tears in my eyes, I love my Mom so much...miss my Mom so much).  Anyway, my favorite memory of Woolworth is the seasonal Apple Dumpling they served smothered in this glorious rich, creamy sauce.  The thing must have weighed a full pound :-)  At the time I weighed all of 95 pounds and could devour the entire thing.  YUMMY.....smiling  BTW, that WAS lunch...LOL

Gail,

Wasn't it nice to just be sitting around and talking and not being distrubed by a ringing cell phone?  The times were  a lot more simple back in the day.  Oh the memories and they are not all bad.
