I wrote a post a few weeks ago on why we should comment on blogs.  The blog I maintain is very relevant to the Real Estate industry so the moral of the story was to take sometime and begin to comment.  I even offered a reciprocol comment.  Well out of the 1,200 people who read the post, only 6 commented.  Not such a good statistic. Kinda tells the story of exactly what I have been saying for a while.  Most Agents are not taking full advantage of blogging.  I get to meet many, many agents and this comment resonates, blogging takes too much time.  But then again, anything worth while in life is costs you time or money.

Gaining links from blog commenting is a great fringe benefit. The link is the reward for posting a good relevant comment. Commenting is the other half of why we blog, we blog to join the conversation. Those comments complete the circle.  Again blogs are all about engaging in the conversation.  The conversation in the form of comments builds the links, the links expands the conversation.  It is this full circle relationship that will provide you success as a blogger.

So get out their and comment.  By the way commenting on lots of blogs besides the AR community helps expand your sphere of influence.  So get out there.

Hi Mark~ I read a lot of posts every single day, but I don't always comment, unless of course I have something to say.  Just wanted to let you know that I did read this!  Vickie

I too do not comment unless I have something wrothwhile to say.  I will not comment just for the sake of commenting.

Thanks Mark.  You are so right about blogging.  What a difference it can make with expanding web presence.  A little known secret waiting to be discovered.

Thanks for the reminder and encouragement, many times I do not want to comment just for "points" sake.....seems like a waste of time.  I read so many blogs,  and truly do appreciate greatly, the resources and professional sharing here on AR.  Keepin the faith.............

I read a lot of posts but don't always post a comment.   I will try to comment more often because I think it is important to the original poster to know that people are interested in what they are saying.

I agree with Dawn.  A lot of people comment and write blogs about the "useless" comment.  The way I view these comments is people just wanting to recognize the blog author for their work.

No one is going to raise their points that drastically by commenting.

Ryan - I defeinetly don't agree with that - respectively speaking.  Good commenting builds your sphere of influence, raises your creditability and even if the blog uses no follow the long term result will be seen in the people who come to your blog via this credability.  Blogging is all about the conversation.  If your comments are like "Good Job", yes I do agree, nothing much will change at all.  But done right comments are powerful.

Mark:

I agree that blogging about real estate is worthwhile and honestly I try to keep it a secret around my office that I am blogging here and there.  No sense in encouraging other Realtors in my area to blog.  Although for the many friends I have met online I always tell them that blogging is worthwhile.

Posting comments on other people's blogs is less important to me though.  Most every blog places the external no follow property in the outbound links so the search engine spiders don't follow the link and your site doesn't get "credit" for the link in the eyes of the search engine.

So certainly if there is a subject that you are interested in and would like to provide some comments, I say go ahead and comment.  If you are looking for some search engine optimization for your site by making comments then you are probably not getting the best results for your time.

So I guess we will agree to disagree on this point.

Thanks Mark,

I often will read the comments left by blog readers and think they are less interested in commenting and more about scoring add'l points.  It leaves me less interested in making a comment and I often don't just because I feel like its a conversation that no one is really engaged in.

I enjoy when people further the conversation with additional insights.  I don't find the more common 'pat on the back' very interesting or useful. I look at it like a regular discussion... if you say something and everyone simply responds by saying "yes" or "I agree", it's a pretty dull conversation.  I say, contribute something new of interest or don't bother.  And I suppose that goes for initial blogs as well... there's so much noise out there. Let's make an effort to stimulate each others' minds and spare the trivial.

Mark, If someone comment on one of my post then I try to reciprocate and comment on their post.  Case in point; you commented on the post about my son's welcome home ceremony to Fort Hood.  I think it is a courtesy to comment back.  Now I had two featured post in a row which is VERY unusual for me so it is taking me a long time to reciprocate but like I said I feel it is a courtesy.  I have met so many wonderful people on the rain reciprocating.
