For over 60 years, Handel’s has been serving homemade ice cream in all kinds of assorted flavors. We discovered Handel’s when we moved to Brecksville. It is actually located in Broadview Heights, about 13.6 minutes down the road from our house—yes, we have it timed. All we have to say to our kids is “how about going to Handel’s?” and they move faster than a squirrel chased from the birdfeeder by our Labrador retriever!
Here’s the thing—Handel’s was rated by Chocolatier Magazine as "One of the Best Ice Creams in America.".
Here’s another thing--they are open all year round! We just took the kids there last Friday, February 7th. Was it cold outside—you bet! Did I have to get out and order and bring everything to the car? You bet! Was it worth every flavor? YOU BET! Here is a sampling of what we had that night:
- One scoop of Cotton Candy for our son
- One scoop of Banana Cream Pie on a cake cone for our daughter
- One Turtle Sundae for Julie and another for Chris
I am getting hungry just writing this post! I cannot begin to name the multitude of flavors that, between the four of us, we have tried, but I will try: Cake Batter, Buckeye, Green Apple Ice, Blue Moon, Spouse Like a House, Mint Chocolate Chip, Lemon Ice, Butter Pecan, Strawberry Cheesecake Chunk….shall I continue? This does not even include the sundaes, malts, and hurricanes we have sampled!
During the summer, on any give night, there are at least 4-5 people staffing Handel’s and always a thick line of kids and adults waiting with anticipation. We have met a great number of people waiting in line and it is a blast. Everyone is always in a good mood when ice cream is involved!
The other cool thing they do is free doggie cones for your best friend’s birthday. We have indulged our Labrador retrievers over the years and they love it. How could I resist putting a picture of that! Yes, everyone loves ice cream!!
