After reading Brad's post, ActiveRain's NEW Membership Plan, I began to write my comment.  It grew and grew until I decided to post it here instead.

I just got through reading all the comments.  Yes, I know I need to get a life.  However, one big observation I made is, if everyone would read the entire post many, many questions would not have to be asked, and answered over and over again.

I have not, to my knowledge, earned one penny from Active Rain, YET.  There have been a couple of referrals I received which did not even materialize into an appointment.  My market is not a big sought after market.  Very few people around the country are thinking of moving to Lake Anna, VA.  In fact, many people in Virginia don't even know the lake exists.  As they learn about it, more and more people do think about Lake Anna.  Active Rain is helping me to get the word out.  What more can I ask for?

Why do I remain on Active Rain?  Because I have gotten so much more out of it than $29.00 a month could ever buy me.  Information is here in overload, friendships are here for the taking, ideas are plentiful, feedback is forthcoming if you need it, and that's just scratching the surface.

Yes, I will be able to continue on Active Rain without paying the $29.00 a month because I joined some time ago.   However, I do contribute to the solvency of AR.  I'm a community sponsor (several communities) and purchased an outside blog soon after we were offered the chance.  One reason I did these things was because I am hoping they will increase my business.  The other reason is, I want Active Rain to not only survive but to become stronger.  I considered it an investment in my business and in a social network that means much to me.

Everyone has to determine how to spend their own money.  Make the choice that is right for you.  Do not be shortsighted just because you did not see this coming down the pike.  Be sure you have thought through your decision thoroughly.  Perhaps you will realize this is one expense that is well worth investing in.  The rewards are more than meet the eye.

Active Rain is not Facebook or My Space nor Twitter or Linkedin.  I am a member of those other sites and my opinion is, Active Rain is much, much more.  If the others went away I would never even miss them.  I cannot say the same for the Rain.

Kate - I don't even recall how I discovered AR, but I can't imagine a day without it.  Even if I don't post or respond to someone else's post, I am here reading and absorbing all the hints and tips that others so graciously share.

At this point in time I'm really glad I won't be paying ther $29 a month, but I can certainly see the value in it.

You've put together a wonderful post, and I thank you for injecting a little balance in this situation.

Kate, I agree with you 100%.  However, there are and will remain many who have not yet gotten started who will be possibly turned away by the monthly fee.  Likely, they'll be the ones who wouldn't have used AR even when it was 100% free.

Very well said - Active Rain, IMHO, cannot be compared to Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, etc. AR is so much more. I found this post via Twitter - but how could you have conveyed your thoughts in 140 characters or less?  :)

Well said, I have got referrals and business from it, probably much more than the staff as made in monetary dollars. As I have said many times, it is the value of the relationships and the 24/7 learning that has propelled my business forward.

Hi Audrey...So true.  If most people thought about it they would find they are spending money in places that will not help them as much as Active Rain.  AR is a bargain.

Hi Marchel...I'm glad you took the time to write what you did.

When I first started in real estate back in the mid-80s, real estate was done in the office.  That's where you were when you were not out previewing or with clients.  We worked side by side with our fellow agents.  We learned so much from them.  Now many of us do a great deal of work from home.  Even when we are in the office most of the other agents are not.

AR is our office too.  Here we are surrounded by our fellow agents.  We learn and grow and we do it in the company of others.

I like it too.

Hi Kathy...Exactly.  The friendships are such a bonus.

Our lives are more than just business.  Plus, the benefit here is all the things we learn and ideas we get.  We may not be able to pinpoint how exactly it helps our business but we know intrinsically that it does.

Kate, I think your description of Much Much more is dead on. I think the only thing they goofed up on recently is not having everyone's picture with the comments. Maybe they will change that. It seems discriminatory to me.

Hi Gary...I concur.  At first I thought it was just a matter of getting everyone's photo up and running.  Like you, I hope we see that happen.

Our relationships with people go way beyond when they signed up on AR.  We want to see everyone we are communicating with or none at all.  Well, maybe I shouldn't be using we when I can only speak for myself and probably you.  Others haven't said anything to me except I have seen many without their photos wondering what they needed to do to get it.  Hopefully they will not have to buy a thing.

Today I saw talks about Twitter doing something to raise funds but I don't know what yet and the same for Facebook.

I would not miss either of those but I do not want to be without Active Rain.

I have received quite a bit of business from ActiveRain. It may be that I'm in a very large area and sometimes I'm just found in spite of myself. I seriously wish I knew how to take advantage of the ways that blogging brings in the clients... but... search engine optimization is not my strong point.

I'm hoping that the cost of entry is not too step for the newbie. As a neophye, I posted for a few months and wondered if my thoughts were hidden... and my time was not well spent.

For me it took real results (incoming calls and/or emails) to convince me that it's worth it. This is not something that happens when members write to members... unless you're in the referral business or participate for education and/or social benefit.

So... I hope those who have not been grandfathered will be able to see the benefit of paying for the service. It would be sad to see this become a network of old-timers writing to each other about the same old topics.

MORNING KATE!  When I joined AR I was hesitant - but kept going with it.  Even though I haven't seen referrals, etc., like many I look at this as "continuing eduction"!   I think if the new blogger could see that value when they start - they will reap the rewards in time!  This was nicely written!  Gabrielle
