Preparing For a Successful Relationship

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Homes By Cross, Inc.

This topic runs the gauntlet. How many people have found themselves in a relationship that they were unprepared? Some people walk blindly into relationships, many times suffering consequences.

Whew....This happens a lot, and applies to all our interrelationships. If we were always prepared, lawyers would be out of business.

I'll narrow this specifically to our business.

There is no single right answer. But preparing for a successful relationship before you meet with potential clients helps pave the way.

OK, we all have different methods. Hopefully you understand the concept.

It has to begin with our attitude. Preparing for a successful relationship with a rusty attitude will most certainly poison the early stages, and may eventually kill it. Call it a predisposition.

People are naturally wary. Buyers and Sellers are looking for reasons to exclude you, not include you in their quest..So don't forget to bring your "good" attitude" to your first meeting. Ever seen someone forget and accidently bring the wrong one?

There are also some relationships I will never have. I choose my clients as they choose me. I am prepared to tell someone that I am not a good match.

Another way I prepare is by reviewing all the questions and answers necessary for both of us to begin a successful relationship. It never hurts to review ,even if you've done it a thousand times.

I'm not a Boy Scout, but I like their credo.

Good post. I was at a seminar where a gentlemen was speaking and said " Even when you answer the phone do it with a smile on your face because people can still feel a vibe." He said to put a note next to your phone that says "smile" with a happy face next to it to remind you.

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

Excellent post.    Thanks for the reminder, too, that it's better to be selective, when accepting a client.    We usually "know" when someone will prove to be a problem for us.    It is about seeking the "good fit".   Preparation is essential!

Claude,

There is a lot of power in a few of the statements. Bold lettering does not do them justice so I am going to repeat it. "Preparing for a successful relationship with a rusty attitude will most certainly poison the early steps, and may eventually kill it." One way to use this is, If you are having the worst day of your life and nothing is going right, reschedule the appointment instead of faking a good attitude. Prospects can sense emotion through body language. Never fails.

"I choose my clients as they choose me." You have to remember the first meeting is a two way interview. You are interviewing them as clients just as much as they are interviewing you for your services. Doing business with bad people turns into bad business. It will always end poorly. You will never get a referral.

Thanks again Claude. I will add that I do not sell real estate but I do sell. I pride myself in superior interviewing skills when pertaining to prospects. I have saved my company thousands of dollars, every year by walking away from bad prospects.
