I receive calls periodically, and was contacted again recently by an Oregon Veteranlooking to use the Oregon Veteran Home Loan program to refinance their home in Southern Oregon. There are a lot of misconceptions about this program, and these folks were recently misinformed. The Oregon Veteran Home loan, like the USDA Guaranteed Rural Housing program, requires:

  • The purpose of the loan be to purchase a home
  • Home must be the borrowers' primary residence

When shopping for your home loan, if you come across something that doesn't sound right, trust those instincts and make sure you double check with another source!

I had 5 buyers last year that used ODVA.  I love working with that lender.  I wish all lenders worked like they do.

Hi Melina - I agree with you that dealing with the Oregon VA underwriters and folks in their home loan office is a pleasure. They are helpful, consistent, knowledgeable and great to work with. What I was referring to above was an Oregon Vet who was told they could refinance their existing mortgage on the OR Vet home loan, but this program is designed for purchase transactions like the 5 you did last year. Thanks for stopping by.

I hear you. I make sure that my clients know when they purchase that they can't refi with them.
