Easily Add Photos To Your Blog Posts

PicnikIn a previous post I talked about using Picnik as a way to create a custom header and background for your ActiveRain blog. This is a great use for Picnik, and really makes your blog stand out. However, there are many other uses for the site.

Adding images and photos to your blog posts makes them easier to read, more appealing to the reader, and can even help to illustrate a point or give an example of something.

If you're currently using images in your blog posts you may be finding them online or taking them from your computer, then putting them into a photo editing program such as Adobe Photoshop. If you're not using images in your blog posts it may be because you're not sure how to, don't have a good program to edit images, or just haven't thought about it.

Well, Picnik makes it easy to take a photo you found or have and add rounded corners, a drop shadow, border, make it black and white, and much more! It's all FREE and very easy to use.

For an easy to follow video tutorial on using Picnik check out my previous post on it.

FirefoxWhat that other post does not cover though is the Firefox plugin that allows you to instantly take a photo you're viewing on a website and import it into Picnik with a single click.

Once you install the plugin you can simply right click any image on a website and select "Edit in Picnik".

Not only does this plugin allow you to edit images on a website, you can also take a screenshot of that website! So if you're writing about a website, blog, etc, you can now have a screenshot of that site instantly created using Picnik. You can then take that screenshot and crop it to the exact part of the site you wanted to add to your blog post.

Here's a quick screenshot I did in less than a minute of the plugin page for the Picnik plugin:

Picnik Screenshot

Adding screenshots when you're talking about a site or product really adds to your blog posts. It helps illustrate a point, give an example, or simply show what a site looks like without your readers having to click a link.

Oh, and if you're on the fence about switching to Firefox, check out this post by Brad Andersohn: Internet Explorer vs Mozilla Firefox The Mythunderstanding

* All of the above images and screenshots were created using Picnik and the Picnik plugin on Firefox.

James, I love Picknik, it is so easy to use...very friendly to the user...I tried to use Firefox but some of my programs do not work correctly with it...and few of them I have to run through IE..Does IE have a plugin for edits and to take a screen shot?

With smiles,

Bo

James....Great Post!

I had never used Firefox, so the tech guy from our office introduced me. I loved it....for awhile! I've already forgotten what the problem was, but I've gone back to Internet Explorer. I know our MLS does not work with it, but I had some other issue that it was not working with other programs or something on my computer.

Technology....Ugh!

I've used Picnik for awhile and didn't know it did that screen image!  I'll have to try it even though I love SnagIt for that type of thing.  Thanks for the great tutorial and taking your time to enlighten us.

FotoFlexer is another option that does other things Picnik doesn't.

I hadn't heard of picnik.  There are a lot of great freebie photo software out there including my old favorite IRFANVIEW.  I must go check out picnik so see how it compares.  It sounds like it has more capability.

Hi James, Oh I'm excited to try picnik. An earlier comment asked if it works in IE? Do you know how it compares to snagit? I'd love to know. I've just sub. to you.

Picnik is one of my very favorite free web tools!  It is time consuming to weed through the different products out there but save yourself some time this one is well worth your trouble!

Hello James,

Your article was very timely, just what I have been looking for!... I am not a newbie, but I never seem to find the time to research...and learn new stuff!  Thank you, I will definitely put the time into learning Picknick. Your advise is sound and to the point!

I'll have to visit Picnik.  It seems I went there once but had too many irons in the fire to get a grip with it.  However I am sure it is very useful and I need all the help I can get.  Thanks for the information.

Hi James, OK. I visited picnik. It looks like a pretty robust program. I had been using Kodak easyshare software because I just drop my new kodak camera into the docking port to upload. Picknik is sweet!

Great tip.  Although I love using picnik, the Screengrab! Firefox plugin is a little easier to use for this application, I think.

Love your blog - great tips and advice.  Nicely done.

Bo- my friend - ditch Internet Explorer.  It's so yesterday.  :)  It will take you only a day to get used to using Firefox and it is so far superior, you'll never look back.
