turkeysMinnesotans have long been aware to keep an eye out on roads for wildlife hazards. Most state residents have had at least one family member encounter a white-tailed deer either head on or as a near miss. We learn as soon as we hit the road at 16 years old with the ink still wet on our licenses, to keep an eye out for those 4-legged hazards that jump out of the ditch an can total a car with a direct hit.

But have you ever encountered a wild turkey? Although the wild turkey had nearly disappeared from Minnesota at the turn of the century, these birds have made a comeback as of late. It is estimated their population is over 30,000 according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Living in Anoka County I know this first hand. As a Ham Lake resident with a couple of acres, our wooded area has been home to a flock of wild turkeys for the past year. The eighteen birds are beautiful, but we have a sort of love/hate relationship. You see, I know first hand how stupid these beautiful birds are.

OK, what would prompt such a statement? A few years back as I traveled with my boys home from a birthday party down Lexington Avenue, I had an encounter with a wild turkey. Or rather my windshield did. We were just coming up on one of the S-curves with almost no shoulder anwindshieldd a deep ditch. This is a two-lane, 55 mph road edged with tall grass. Another car was approaching us in the other lane when all of the saddened this stupid bird darted out onto the road. As the other car approached the wild turkey attempted flight and was able to get just high enough to hit my windshield square in the middle and bounced off the top into the ditch.

We were lucky. Our new van only lost a windshield...The dumb turkey lost its life. And NO, we did not take it home with us to eat it!

It could have been much worse. A week later we saw on the news a woman who hit a wild turkey going 70 mph on the interstate. The bird went through the windshield and ended up in a pile of blood and feathers in the lady's back seat!

As a Realtor, I am driving all over the countryside from Blaine to Chisago. And from North Branch to White Bear Lake. The wild turkey population is thriving in Anoka, Chisago and Washington Counties. If you travel through this area and see wild turkeys near the road, try to give them room as they cannot fly as high or as quickly as a pheasant. If I see them near the side of the road, I proceed with caution. I hope to never have hit a 30 pound dead weight with my car again!

Teri, as a neighbor of yours in Wisconsin (with anywhere from 9 to 23 turkey in the backyard on any given day), I appreciate your posting this.  Many people do not realize the damage birds can cause.  Defensive driving and complete awareness of your surrounds are the key.

Leigh--FYI these birds have been spotted in the city! One on the news was in downtown St. Paul and the other was in the backyard of someone in Minneapolis. They were very excited but wanted it gone! Like I said...Big birds!

Theresa--You are welcome! We were lucky. It was a few years ago when my boys  weren't tall enough to ride in the front seat yet. All of the glass shards ended up in the front passenger side. I hate to think of what could have happen had someone been in that seat! Watch those ditches for these birds...They really can't fly well!

Teri, I live on the corner I believe your talking about off 146th, and boy do I know what your talking about. I see flocks of wild turkeys around here. I have installed those silent whistle's on my car, they are made for deer and I wonder if they keep the turkey's away too. I hope so from the look of your van. Good post and thanks for the warning.

Good Day!! have a cup of java and a smile on me :)

Hi Duayne,

That's the area! Don't know if a whistle helps as when they get spooked they just don't get enough altitude quick enough to get out of the way...And they stupidly go right in front of the car.

It's not just that area either. I have had encounters all over Anoka and Chisago counties with these birds. It is amazing how many flocks just hang out in roadside ditches.

I was driving in Dakota County a couple weeks ago on my way to Shakopee when I drove by about 30 wild turkeys walking along the 13. This is a major road that large trucks and semis use everyday. I am amazed that they don't care about the noise or moving vehicles. They have adapted to us very well. On the other side, last week I got to witness a spring geese crossing near where I live. Daddy goose was in front, 4 little ducklings were behind him, and momma brought up the rear. It was the cutest thing I have seen in a while and it was nice that four lanes of traffic stopped to let them through.

Jennifer--I think they had some of the relatives of the geese on the news trying to cross 4 lanes of 60mph traffic in rush hour. They were on one of the traffic management cameras. It was cute but lucky that no one...had an accident as they were stopping traffic on the freeway! BTW--Wouldn't want to hit one of those big birds either!
