facebook logoFacebook was the domain of my 16-year old in our house - until Mom discovered it through Active Rain. See if you can relate to anything in the Time magazine article tweeted by @guykawasaki. Seriously, if you're over 40 and on Facebook, this is a must read!

With more than 175 million people on FB, CEO Mark Zuckerberg points out that it would be the sixth most populated country in the world (think Pakistan).

"Facebook is five. Maybe you didn't get it in your news feed, but it was in February 2004 that Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg, along with some classmates, launched the social network that ate the world. Did he realize back then in his dorm that he was witnessing merely the larval stage of his creation? For what began with college students has found its fullest, richest expression with us, the middle-aged. Here are 10 reasons Facebook is for old fogies:"

Great article and oh, so true! I admit, I really don't understand Twitter. I use it and I've come across some awesome links, but overall, I'd rather be on FB.

I disgree, I think we need to on be as many social network sites that we can yet still do our daily work routine and make money. When was the last time you googled yourself? If you can't find yourself on any pages, you need to get on that Twitter or Facebook more often.

Debbie - Thanks! I am beginning to get Twitter. There was a great post today by Liz Moras that may help and give you ideas:

Sonny - We do need to be on as many network sites as we can handle and understand. Definitely if we google ourselves, we should pretty much take up the whole page!

Ron - It was so funny it almost made me cry laughing!

I dont think you can put an age on this stuff. You need to be doing this if you are going to do RE for the next few years.

Shane - Most definitely you can't put an age on it. It's just poking fun at so many boomers who have wound up on something that was started for college kids. I suppose 175,000,000 people can't be wrong!

Hannah - It's hard to keep up with it all. I think most people gravitate to one or two. I've read that it's recommended to concentrate on no more than three social networks and go deep. Otherwise you're spread too thin. I'm with you on the little sleep thing.

Twitter is a great source for being part of or getting involved in a rapidly-growing community.  There are thousands of users who "Tweet", "Twit," etc. and love it.  The trick is to not promote your business and be part conversations.  The best way to do this is to go to:

search.twitter.com (do not use www or http://) and search for your area, neighborhood, interests--about whatever you want to engage in conversation.  Watch what is going on in the conversation for a while and see where you can contribute.  If people like you, they will naturally follow and will make it their business to find out about your business.

I hope this helps!

Dawn - Right. Twitter is very transparent. Just be yourself and business will come. Thanks for the info.

Michael - I'm definitely in the old fogie category and I am ROFL! After all, we 'old fogies' have taken over facebook!

Can you imagine Mark Zuckerberg would have ever dreamed that in 5 years he would be considered among the internet great that started yahoo and google.  Remember, they started those companies the same way he started facebook.

You are right, this article is hilarious. I'm afraid I fit the profile to a "T". I joined Facebook only about two months ago. It has been alot more fun than I ever expected!

Facebook has become an important part of my social media marketing strategy. I have already listed and sold a home from being there!

Daniel - Right. I'm sure even visionaries don't imagine the full implications of what they envision. They just know it's a great idea.

Suzanne - It is, isn't it? Me too :) I love Facebook and am beginning to love Twitter as well. If you're not tweeting, give it a try!

Bill - Well then, you're living proof that Facebook is an important part of our marketing and the fun part is a bonus!
