Paul Chaney and I had a great coaching session yesterday about Internet Marketing where he shared an acronym from a book he is reading called Secrets of Online Persuasion by John-Paul and Deborah Micek.   Some of you will have done a lot of these things, and some of us need to work on a couple of these points - but they are true, they are simple and they are a MUST for successful Internet Marketing.

Secrets of Online PersuasionF- Focus of Niche

O- Optimize Key words

O- Organize Content

D- Dig into your results

Paul called these the 4 keys to "spider bait" - I thought that was genius!

FOCUS ON NICHE- for your blog to be successful you need to be passionate and knowledgeable (passion + knowledge = niche)

OPTIMIZE KEY WORDS- We've talked about this before but cannot stress it enough.  The more specific the keyword, the better the results.  Less used key words can mean a lot of traffic.  Pay attention to 2 and 3 word key phrases (they may get the results you need). And here's something that made me smile:

Short Keywords -----> browsers

Long Keywords -----> buyers

ORGANIZE CONTENT - this goes into detail about categories and tags based on keywords (remember that the consumer needs to be able to find the content and so do the spiders).

DIG INTO YOUR RESULTS -  This is the most important aspect of this whole lesson , and I am particularly glad it made it at the end of the "food chain".  I think you would agree that this is the area that we take for granted the most and has to do with evaluation and analysis.  What are your STATS?

  • which keywords or key phrases are bringing traffic to your website?
  • where is unsolicited traffic coming from?
  • If traffic is coming from other sites, make sure you acknowledge the source and thank them
  • If this is a concept that just seems "out there" for you - check out Web Analytics For Dummiesby Pedro Sostre and Jennifer LeClaire.
  • Micek says to reply to ALL comments left on your blog (You know I was happy to hear that!)

We will be going into ways of keeping your content fresh and discussing what happens when "your well runs dry".  Dont forget to check out this post by Caleb giving us the stats of The Project Blogger Competition - Project Blogger Round-Up: Week 4 April 30th- May 6th  - I'm also supposed to be telling you to VOTE since a lot of Active Rainers have not realized they can vote each week for their favorite Project Blogger Team.

Sarah - that's exactly what I said!

Maggie - I've cut a couple of hours from my "sleep time" - it really helps!  : )

Missy - I am so glad to hear that - good to know my efforts are helping out.

Steve - alright!  I will certainly keep it coming.

Lisa - I think the length of the key words is really important and rather than using "real estate", you use "Miami Shores Real Estate" or any of the areas that you farm - these end up bringing better quality traffic.

Michelle - so do I , analytics is so important and most of us put it in the back burner.

Ines- I love all the stuff you are sharing. I'm learning from Greg too, but not in the same way. Sometimes it's helpful to the same thing said differently.

Thanks Ines.  This looks like a great book.  Thanks for the summary!  I was analyzing my stats yesterday, and it was interesting what comments in my post were driving search engine traffic.  It wasn't what I expected!

Ginger - that is perfect and illustrates why it is so important to see these stats - now you can focus on content that is relevant to your traffic....and I'm sure that will keep changing.  Thanks for the input.

Thanks Ines for the highly informative post. Now can I learn to do the stat analysis by getting that book or is there some other way I can do it within the AR framework?

I also had no idea about the competition. Thanks for providing the voting links.

Bill - I don't thik the analytics can be done in a platform like AR because it is a community network.  I think Stats apply more to outside blogs where you can use systems like awstats.com, hittail.com, nichebot.com, googleanalytics.com    .....I personally have not gotten to this point yet because my site is not ready, but hope to get into stats soon.

Great and helpful post, Ines!!

I am not getting any traffic from Google to my blog (Live in Los Gatos) at all. Zip, nada, zilch. Not sure if it's because it is a second level domain or what, but I've been trying to address it this week. Makes me crazy to have 75 posts and to not be indexed at all by Google... sigh....  (But my posts here on Active Rain are all picked up.)

I am gonna bookmark this post.

Mary - I don't know what to tell you but seems really strange - maybe you should look into the second level domain, and follow basics Keyword rich titles and content - what does Frances say? - (btw I ordered the Web Analytics for dummies).

Meli - it's a fabulous book and the authors are hard-core social networkers (is that a word) and always willing to help out.  Take a look at their blog, I learn something every single time I visit.
