First, this post isn't about any one particular person because I see this happen over and over again with my own clients and Rain members who email me asking for help.

Second, I was really hesitant to write this post because I know that a little knowledge is usually a very dangerous thing but... since almost half of my projects and emails for "help" seem to come from people who've tried to do tech stuff themselves, I thought this might be the right time to try and point the "do it yourselfers" in the right direction!

I have no idea why people who would never dream about doing their own dental work think that doing tech maintenance on a blog or website is something they should try on their own. Even those of us involved in tech stuff 24/7 are challenged by keeping up with the never ending cycle of upgrades, options and better ways of doing things.

I do understand that sometimes it's a matter of your biz budget which means if you want to maintain your blog or website yourself... instead of spending $$$ spend the time learning to do it right.

Having a full blown, self hosted blog like WordPress can be an SEO powerhouse, beautiful and totally customized and built to look exactly the way you dream about but...

Like anything (cars, teeth, homes, etc...) there is usually a certain amount of maintenance involved which means the occasional upgrades of the core software, themes and plugins/widgets to be sure everything is current and secure. This isn't always the best option for everyone, especially if you don't have the skills to launch it properly or to maintain it. If that's the case you can always...

- set up a free blog at any of the various blog platforms available and point a  domain name to it

- invest in an affordable alternative with maintenance built in like ActiveRain's outside blogs

- invest in an ActiveRain outside blog or use the AR standard blog and customize it

And if you're really determined to do it yourself, here are some rock solid places to learn the basics of tweaking, pimping and modifying...

- WordPress.org  everything you ever wanted to know about installing and tweaking WordPress

- WordPress site maintenance (self explanatory)

- CSS Basics  a free, easy to follow course on CSS styling (changing the layout/look of your site/blog)

- W3schools.com CSS Tutorials (more in depth lessons than CSS Basics)

- the AR search feature to find anything you'd like to know about customizing your AR blog

- for tutorials and free graphics to get started on AR, my Rain blog has a ton of info

The point is that you have options and alternatives. Doing your own dental work isn't always the best idea, neither is doing your own tech stuff. OK, end of lecture, have a great weekend!

marti, I had Jay do maintenance on my WP.org blog this week. I would never attempt it. I know what I can do and what my limitations are. I read Kathy's post about that one little trackback messing her's up.

Time IS Money so I would rather spend the money on the experts than try to learn it ALL out there. I also learned this week that pluggins had to be ugraded and I didn't know that.

Nice links to the posts.

Missy... hi there, re "Time IS Money"... like the FSBOs eventually figure out!;-) Re "I also learned this week that pluggins had to be ugrade"...

Pretty much everything in a blog/site has to be maintained, updated, etc... as things progress. It's fine to do it yurself if you know what you're doing but some people just "fool around" with this stuff which causes new problems.

Toula... hi and thx, so much good stuff is added here each week, I try to point out the highlights. Have a great weekend!

As you know, I truly know of what you speak and I am here to tell anyone who will listen to hire you ASAP!  While I was fumbling along okay, your help is invaluable and my blogs are functioning perfectly!  Now I just watch for icing on the cake.  I LOVE Carole's design btw.

Marti, I think it looks fantastic and would have NEVER attempted it myself--I know my limitations on anything related to "tech."  I can't thank you enough for the wonderful work and all you did for my site, I am just thrilled with it!

Diane... thx but what happened to you wasn't your fault, you just got caught up with an unethical company who tried to blackmail a bunch of people, fortunately everything turned out for the best!

Carole... it was totally my pleasure to help out, I love the new look as well, it's breaths "fire". ;-)

Joyce... there's nothing wrong with doing it yourself if you really know what you're doing.

Janice... awwwww thx, I'll try my best. ;-)

I see I need to spend more time reading you and your great ideas/posts/materials.  There is so much!  I just skimmed your last 3 posts, and am feeling whelmed! I know there is more I could be, and probably need to be doing.  It seems like I can barely keep up with what i am doing.  I love your advice though -- about not trying certain things at home.  I have just talked to a tech guy about 'fixing' my site (one problem is that it loads too slow), and he has already given me hope as he talked about integrating things in a whay I hadn't even known about!  I bookmarked your entire site -- and will be back!   BTW -- on my next upgrade - I am going back to mac -- as the PC drives me crazy! keeping fingers crossed that I will be able to do soon!

It is really hard to keep up with everything, but I am trying to be more focused.  We actually met with someone here in our office last week that offers help with websites, blogging and social networking.  It may be something that I am going to look into.  In the meantime, your blog offers great suggestions.  Thank you.

Alexandra... it's difficult to keep up because things change so fast and constantly.

Sheila... for some people money is the issue for others, they prefer to keep control or do it themselves which is fine if they actually know what they're doing.

Susan... hi and thx, have a great week!
