Visiting a childhood home in Searcy Arkansas. You CAN go home again!

This blog is written by my friend Don who comments on my blogs and loves the old town of Searcy Arkansas where he grew up.  To see his picture and his very first blog visit him here.

Remember what is was like to visit a childhood home?

Nothing looked quite the same. Boundaries had changed, memorable trees were gone and replaced by others. The house may have been renovated or even torn down.

404 N. 4th Street

On the left is a recent picture of my house when I was 8 years old. On the right There is me standing on the top of my father's Ford Model T truck in front of that house in Searcy, Arkansas in 1948.

It's amazing the house is still standing. I remember a screened in back porch that overlooked a large lot with pecan, fruiting mulberry, and persimmon trees. Fruit bats were active in the mulberry tree. One 4th of July, I was shooting off firecrackers under that tree and dislodged a baby bat. I put it alongside the house and watched the parents sweep down and pick it up in the late evening.

Don joined awhile back but just posted this first blog and it could only go to members because of the new rules.  It needs to be seen by the Searcy folks so with his permission I'm reblogging it!!  Thanks, Don.  We hope to see more of you on ActiveRain!!!

Barbara, it is fun to go back and see the old places we used to live in----all the way through to the very end I was trying to figure out how that could be you on the top of that truck:)

Zane, he has pictures of almost everything!!  If not he can put pieces of other pictures together and make you a composite!  Did you know that apparently we have to check the comments box before writing the comment now for us to have it forwarded?  Your comment didn't come through email?

Welcome to whatever it is you're doing, Don.   I'll certainly look forward to LOTS more good old days pictures and comments....and I'll alert some of our Searcy friends (no longer in Searcy) about this.  Are you SURE you're really standing on the truck, or is that some of your trick photography?   Just kidding.

Anita, be sure to check the comments tab BEFORE making comments.  They've made a change and comments are coming to email unless you check it.  It has been moved up higher.  At least I think that is what is going on.

Thanks Barbara for linking to my blog. I'll investigate what is required for other than members to post comments. You are so kind to take me under your wing.

Anita, no that was not photo trickery for me standing on top of the truck. However, I did clean up the house shot. There was a car on the lawn blocking the right side of the house, a dog on the porch, and junk in the yard.

Barbara, I looked into re-blogging a little and found this:

Re-blogging is a feature that will be available for members who have an ActiveRain Outside Blog.

Also, A reBlog facilitates the process of filtering and republishing relevant content from many other Blogs. reBloggers subscribe to their favorite blogs, preview the content, and select their favorite posts. These posts are automatically published through their favorite blogging software."

Charles, I do have one more pic showing part of the truck.

Don & Model T Truck

I may work on this to show all the truck

Don, your new friend Zane will love this old truck picture.  He's an old car/truck nut!  Ooops!  Don't tell him I said that.

Barbara,

When you go back and visit the old home place, it is never as large as it seemed when you were a child.  Great post.

Konnie Mac, are you telling us you were a little trouble-maker?   LOL

Mary, how right you are.  I noticed too that when I visited my parents they were not large people like I'd thought.  Everything seems larger when you ar e young.
