Hello everybody, this is Chase of The Lisa Udy Team, and I am here to give some information on the Long Tail.
I am the internet marketing director for Lisa and her team. I would like to discuss how to implement the long tail and target your long tail keywords.
First of all what is Long Tail:
Long Tail - "refers to the longer more specific search terms, SEO specialists generally will refer to this in relation to marketing for niche markets rather than broad search terms". -Effective Reality Sites
If you would like a detailed description on what the Long Tail is, check out this great post by Joel McDonald.
Now there have been a lot of posts on Activerain on the long tail keywords. The problem I am noticing is they don't necessarily define the crucial components to coming up with long tail keywords.
So, what I am going to do is show you how I have used some long tail keywords, where I got the terms from, and how I used them to get to the first page of Google in a day. Yes, First Page In 1 Day. This, of course, was made possible due to the Google love relationship with ActiveRain.
How I have used some long tail keywords.
Now we, The Lisa Udy Team, have only been on Activerain for just over a month. In one month we have increased our web traffic three fold. Now in a month if you wanted to be on the first or second page of Google with the more competitive keywords, well, it's almost impossible. It takes time, effort, and a strategy to get there. A lonnnnnng thought out strategy and of course great content.
So let me show you how we have been so successful in such a small amount of time.
Here is an example of a post I wrote on a long tail keyword. Now it's not a great post, but it got us #3 on Google for that term in a day. The keyword is: Northern Utah Land. Now try it, search Northern Utah Land in Google and you will see us sitting #3 or #4 it rotates.
Great, now how did I come up with this keyword? This is the secret of long tail. Deciding on your keyword and knowing your competition to decide what needs to be done to be successful.
Now keep in mind, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our marketing strategy. If I gave all our keywords I would be in some hot water with my boss. We have a list of about 70 keywords we would like to target over the next 6 month's using Activerain.
So I assume you're asking, Chase how did you come up with your keyword/s?
This is very simple. So simple, I don't understand why nobody else has written about it, or maybe I just haven't seen it yet.
Anyways, the best way to determine your keywords is, of course, the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. If you haven't used this tool yet, I suggest you start immediately.
"But I don't use Google Adwords PPC advertising." Doesn't matter. You don't need to actually spend any money, let alone, use an Adwords PPC campaign to use this tool.
In the keyword box labeled "Enter one keyword or phrase per line:"Enter any keyword you think would have anything to do with your market. You can enter as many phrases or keywords as you want, make sure you separate them for each line. Now, type in the secret message and hit the "Get Keyword Ideas" button.
Wallaha! Keywords upon keywords and more keywords. It will also have a little bar next to each keyword displaying how competitive the phrase is. Easy right? Take the keywords that would have anything to do with your market, print them out, and don't let your competition find them!
OK, so now we have found our keywords. What do we do with them? Now that we have our printout, let's go ahead and find our long tail keywords first. These are the keywords which have very little competition, so the little competition bar would be less then 1/3 filled. But they still have a descent amount of monthly searches. You can find the amount of monthly searches in the columns following the keywords.
Then you have the "competitive keywords." I am not going to discuss this too much, as there is a lot of articles you can find about these keywords. Let's just focus on our Long Tail keywords.
What do I go to,to get in Google with my long tail keywords?
This is the most important part. CONTENT! CONTENT! CONTENT! Pick a keyword and start writing. Write everything you know about that keyword in a couple of posts. Soon enough you'll start to see the result's; in Google of course.
There isn't really a secret to writing with your keywords. Make sure you title your article with the keyword, and anywhere in your article you can put that keyword in your post, do so. Tag it, post it, and if you work hard enough on your long tail, you will be laying the ground work for the bigger keywords.
Every time you use the keyword, make sure you either bold it, or link it to something relevant on your website!
