Postage Increase - An Opportunity To WOW Our Clients

By
Real Estate Agent with Village Real Estate Services, Inc.

It's official - postage is going up again.  The current cost of 42 cents for a 1 ounce letter will increase to 44 cents beginning May 11.   New postage rates effective May 11, 2009.

Even though most of us are doing almost all of our bill paying online, we all need to actually put a stamp on a few things each month. So, I'm going to be sending all my past and current clents ten 2 cent stamps just to tide them over until they can get to the post office.  I plan to send along a "green" letter to explain that I want to save them from making a special trip to the post office, thus saving them time and energy and a few cents worth of gasoline.

Now, I know that there are many very clever and articulate people here on Active Rain.  I thought it might be fun to hear what you are planning to send to your clients or what you've sent out in the past when the postage rates increased.

Let's share some ideas.  Maybe through our collaborative efforts we can WOW our clients and reduce our carbon footprint by just a little bit...every little bit helps!

Hey Marlene!  The very best mailing I ever did was my 2 cent stamp mailing 2 years ago right before they introduced the Forever stamp.  Now that folks have the forever stamp, it makes the 2 cent stamp mailing obsolete, doesn't it?  I really don't mail a lot so I am wondering if I am way off on this.  Do they still have the other stamps which are only worth what you pay for them?  ie the Love, Christmas, etc.  If so, Girl I am going to do that mailing again!!

It was a mailing that I got from Linda Davis right here on AR.  I wrote it just like she said and I had people stopping me for about 2 weeks after that just to tell me that I was a marketing genius. I didn't let on that it had not been my idea =)  It was so succesful that I was sorry to see the Forever stamp introduced.  I figured I would never need to mail 2 cent stamps anymore.

Hey Maggie - Thanks for your comment.  I'm not sure if people actually buy anything but Forever stamps anymore-why would you?  But, I think there are still folks out there who may still have some of the old stamps around and would appreciate that we're thinking of them.  Many of my clients are elderly and it's hard for them to even get to the post office.  So, I think I'm going to do it anyway.

Thanks for letting us know about Linda Davis' post.  I looked it up and for those who are thinking about doing this, here's the link to her short and sweet version of the note to accompany the 2 cent stamps: Linda Davis' Two Cent Stamp Post

Marlene,

Remember the day that we broke the "fear wood"?  WE WERE AWESOME!

Hey, thanks for the tip...this is something that I wasn't paying attention to!

I've been doing this trick since I started my first business 20 years ago. Clients do love it and they always get used and .50 cent advertising including postage doesn't come about very often.

  • Hi Sheila - I sure do!  What an awesome experience that was.  I keep my broken board in my dressing area to remnind me often of the power we have when we truly focus our energy.  That was a great day and made especially wonderful because of you and your sister, Kristin.
  • Hi Todd - You're so right!  It's so low cost and low tech, but high impact and high touch!

Hi Marlene,

Looks like it's time for "my 2 cents worth" letter again! I agree with Maggie and others, folks just love it.
