It has often been said that the last thing that goes through a bug's mind as it impales itself on your windshield is its... Well you know. I kinda wonder if the same thing was going through this workman's mind while he/she was installing this smoke detector in a fairly new constructed property in an upscale area of Franklin, TN? BTW it was functional...

haha - i don't even want to venture to guess the "why" on the location.  maybe the outlet is prone to sparking?  HAHA  kinda scary!

Michael, was it a carbon monoxide detector?  Then it would be in an appropriate location.  Have a great day.  kevincavanaughonline.com

It will be much easier to change the battery in that location!

OK Michael, here's my guess.   They were afraid the fireplace was going to keep setting off the smoke detector.  Code says you have to have one.  They put it as far away as possible.

I'm not saying I agree with this - Just a guess as to why!

Michael,

This was so that if the smoke started near the floor that it could be detected before it got to the ceiling. :)

Michael it is obvious that it is not a smoke detector. This device measures how high fleas jump. The homeowner must have had a flea circus and this was the training room!

No

The new guy read the directions wrong. He thought it was a giant stick'em on the wall deodorizer.

Michael---perhaps a "brain-detector" is called for in this case?

Mr Michael,

Your naivette is showing. This is now standard and it is done this way to detect if the vermin, mice and rats, are smoking while at work. This is NOT a defect. I have a strong background in fire prevention.

Maybe it is to detect the fire in the basement...no need to wait for the smoke to reach the ceiling, right?

Michael hahaha, if you flip the photo then it would be installed high on the wall and we would wonder why the electrical outlet was installed so high. LOL. ~Rita
