New York’s Museum of Natural History – A Trip Around The World!

I haven’t been to the American Museum of Natural History  since I was a little kid, and the same old dinosaur that scared me then greeted me once again.

But this time, the display of mammals is what blew me away!

They display stuffed animals behind glass in very real looking native settings.    And you expect them all to blink or start munching on some of the very real looking vegetation.  Here are some of my new friends –

The tall guys

The stripey guys

The "Don't Mess With Me" Guy

And there were dozens more!

If you are in New York with children of any age, a trip to this museum is fun and even educational.  And if you need to pick up any Christmas or birthday presents, the 3-level gift shop has a wonderful selection of minerals, fossils, crystals, books, and jewelry.

I can’t believe that during the decade I lived in Manhattan, I never checked this place out!  If I hadn't forgotten to have that kid, I'd probably be more familiar with it.  And check out their web site - there are so many fun exhibits!

The museum is located on Central Park West, between 77th and79th Streets.

Pat, the Museum of Natural History is one of my favorite museums in the world!  I have some great memories of going there as a kid and as an adult.  Even with all the amazing museums we have here in D.C., this one in NYC is really tops!

I absolutely love Museums myself. History is one of my big interests. In fact, the one thing pulling me back to DC is the Smithsonian. I haven't visited since I was in highschool and would love to revisit it through these older eyes ;-)

Growing up in NY, I have great memories of the Museum of Natural History.  My son just moved to Manhattan, and just took his first trip there.  (I could swear I took him there when he was young, but neither of us remember for sure!)  Either way, I'm sure he enjoyed it much more this time.  He is even considering purchasing a membership so that he can go back often, as he said there was far too much to see in one trip.  He loved the butterfly exhibit, and got some really cool photos!

Hi Pat... I love that museum.  I can still remember my grandparents taking me there as a child.  When I moved to New York and went back I was amazed at how vivid the memories were.  And you're right, the exhibits are simply amazing!

I went there the one time I visited NY and loved it.  I just wasn't able to stay long enough.  I'd like to go back and your pictures are lovely.
