Roti Grill: Indian Food Fast, Not Indian Fast Food!

Roti Grill

I like food with bold favors.  Food that is fresh and tasty.  Thai food is one of my favorites and so is Indian food.  (I am also a big fan of Greek and Italian).  Recently I had dinner at Roti Grill.  Located at 4438 McKinney Avenue in Dallas, Roti Grill is what I would call a hybrid restaurant.  You order your food at a counter, it is prepared in the open-style kitchen and then delivered to your table.  But don’t get the wrong idea.  Yes, you get your own soft drinks, but this is not the McDonald’s of Indian food.  This is freshly prepared food of a traditional full-service restaurant quality, and the décor is definitely comfortable and upscale… there is simple a “help yourself” element to the experience, and when the food is this good you don’t even mind.

My dinner companion and I ordered two appetizers, the Lamb Samosa (Pastry filled with Ground Lamb) and the Paneer Pakoda (Homemade Cheese Fritters).  Both were tasty and the worst thig I can say about them is that they were a bit filling, leaving less room for our entrees!

For entrees, we decided on the Chicken Masala and the Paneer Saag.  We also split an Onion Kulcha (Leavened bread filled with spiced onions).  Both entrees were served with bamati rice and were delicious.  The fresh preparation was very evident.   The Chicken Masala is prepared in a creamy tomato-herb-based sauce.  The chicken was perfectly prepared, tender and flavorful and the sauce was seasoned nicely without being hot.  The Paneer Saag Chana, (Cheese prepared with Spinich and Chick Peas) can be seasoned from medium to extra hot.  We opted for the medium-hot and it was a good choice… spicy, but not “burn your mouth off” hot.  Also well prepared, not only did this dish have a nice flavor, but the paneer had a nice texture to it, as well.

Next time we go, we will cut one appetizer, because we were stuffed (portions are generous) and we had to leave without trying the mango Custard that had been recommended to us.  Pricing at Roti Grill was very reasonable.  For each of us, an appetizer, entrée and soft drink with tax was still less than $20 and because there was no waitstaff, there was no tip either, earning the Roti Grill a spot on my “I’m going back for more” list!

Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire?  I love Paneer Saag or most spinach dishes but they are ugly, I realized I could not eat something that looked like that an hour after watching the realisim in the "Academy Award Winning..."  I hope.

Self service at an Indian place.... hmmm

Hi Maureen... I loved Slumdog Millionaire!  So glad it won Best Picture.  And yes, many Indian dishes are not the most attractive, but many of those are VERY delicious.  YUM!
