Last year, I posted several items on the renaming of Dallas’ Industrial Boulevard.  You can read the details here: http://activerain.com/blogsview/700945/But-really-they-had-good-intentions-Dallas-Industrial-Blvd-Update

The controversy surrounding the renaming of that road and the furor that erupted when people were asked their opinion and then ignored was fodder for the local news media for months and nobody ended up looking good.  It was an ugly battle!

This week I received an e-mail newsletter from the Nort Texas Tollway Authority.  They are in the process of choosing a name for the 121 Tollway and at its January meeting, the Board selected three finalists: ‘Interurban Tollway,’ 'Sam Rayburn Tollway,’ and '121 Tollway.'  You can offer input on the choice via e-mail at TalktoNTTA@ntta.org until March 6, 2009.

Let’s hope the NTTA Board has learned something from the City of Dallas!

Steve:  I am guessing that it will end up being named to reflect something either historic or wonderful about this part of North Texas.  But... let me share... that I honestly do "cringe" every time I drive onto the "President George Bush Turnpike."  Some days I almost feel like stopping and putting some sort of protective covers on my tires.  Eek !

Steve,  At least they are soliciting input - that is more than Virginia has done,  Karen

Steve - you didn't hear? They're using my name. Just kidding! I'm glad they're asking for input. I also like the idea of a historical person. We'll see...

Nothing wrong with still using the name the people have know it as... So I would opt for the 121 Tollway.  Of course most people wouldn't oppose the Sam Rayburn Tollway either. :)

Steve, once the highway is opened, it costs a bunch to change a name.  When National Airport became Reagan National, just the signage cost a bunch to change.  So whatever they pick, tell them to make it good!

Hi John... Make sure to vote!  Personally, I like the 121 Tollway best!

Hi Karen Anne... See my comment to John!  Of the 3 options, I think it will be the least confusing.

Hi Karen... Dallas is good for soliciting input... in the past they have had a difficult time though when the input is not what they were expecting.  The NTTA though is different from the Dallas City Council, though, so hopefully they are more genuinely interested in the public's input.

Hi Kim... I'd vote for the Kim Daugherty Tollway! :)

Hi Gail... Brilliant minds think alike! :)

Hi Greg... No word on the stadium name yet.  I think the sponsorship will ultimately have a big impact.  My bet is that AT&T will factor into the name.

Hi Pat... I used to work at National Airport (the portion that was torn down to build the new terminal) and can't ever relate to it by any other name!

How about Highway Robbery as a new name for 121?  Tollroads are obscenely expensive and it won't be long before we can't avoid a toll in order to get across town.
