This spring I purchased a SEGWAY Personal Transporter and it has changed my life.  It's hard to explain if you have never been on one, but there is a kind of Zen that you can associate with the Segway.  It's as though thought and action become one.  Really.  And the Segway is serious transportation with zero emissions.  It's also a heck of a lot of fun.  Trips to the store to pick up milk are no longer a chore and I'm using a lot less gas, which is great now that we are once again over $3.00/gallon.

B/T/W, I live in the town of Hamilton, on the North Shore area of Massachusetts.  So far, I have yet to have seen a Segway anywhere in the 22 towns that make up the North Shore.  As far as I know, mine is the first, so it's a novelty here.

But let me tell you what has happened "business-wise" since I got my Segway.  I have met scores of people.  It's like a conversation magnet.  Everybody wants to talk about it...and try it, of course.  When I come to a stop at a crosswalk, drivers invariably stop to let me pass because they want to see the Segway in action.  I get "thumbs up" from car drivers and truck drivers and pedestrians alike.  I am having face-to-face conversations with people I have never met and it's a real pleasure.

So I got to thinking... Everyone seems so enamored with the Segway, perhaps I can use it for business purposes.  I have officially now launched (you heard it first here at ActiveRain) a promotion I am calling:

MOVE . . . AND BE MOVED!

[check out http://www.listwithjayforafreesegway.com/]

For a limited time, I am offering qualified sellers who list their homes with me a FREE Segway PT when their home closes.  This is NOT a Coldwell Banker offering - It is an independent offering from me to my seller clients and is valued at more than $5,000.00.  The branding for MOVE...AND BE MOVED (Coldwell Banker and Segway) is a natural since each company helps people move, in different ways.

As this posting marks the beginning of the promotion, I will be pleased to update the ActiveRain community about how it is going as time goes on.  Handouts, flyers, postcards, personal appearances, local advertising and online promotion will all begin today.

Wish me luck, and if you know anyone thinking of selling a home in this area that would like a Segway as a sign of appreciation for listing with me, let me know.

Very truly yours,

Jay Burnham, VP

PS: Have any of you tried a promotion of this magnitude?  Let me know if you have experiences to share.

PPS: For those of you old enough to remember the Beatles' ABBEY ROAD album, here's what it would have looked like if the Segway had been around at that time . . .

I think Segways are definite attention getters!

I think it is funny seeing security guards on them... they do that at some malls here

good for you for turning it into a marketing tool!

get a few clients with them and you can hold your own Segway Rallys and get matching jackets!

You must be in a definite higher price market than I am, the price of that alone would sometimes not cover my paycheck. I hope you'll update us on if it works or not.  Great gift!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea Jay!  That might work here in Chicago as well.  I'll pass the note along to the Realtors I work with.

David...I like that idea!  Guess I'll need to order some company tee-shirts!

Candice...What's your average sale price?  Here, it's a little over $500k.

Michael...Yes, in Chicago for sure.  I know there is a Segway dealership there.

What a great marketing idea and useful. I may let you sell my home just to get a Segway!

Hope you have to give dozens away this year!! And they should all have YOUR branding. Is there a place for a "licence plate" with your name, of course. I can just see an outing with all your clients riding together.

Look forward to following this with you! How exciting, Jay!

Margaret...I'll be happy to list your home if it means you will move up to our area!  I like your idea about branding the Segways.  I will definitely have to look into that.  Did you appreciate the the "ListwithJayfora freeSegway.com"...to be sung to the tune of List your Home With Margaret Rome!

Best regards...Jay

Jay, this is genius!  You have managed to combine a conversation starter with innovative marketing and wrapped it all up in an eco-friendly package.  I hope you give away so many that Segway adds another production shift. Only wish I lived in your area so I could snag one, too.

"ListwithJayfora freeSegway.com"...to be sung to the tune of List your Home With Margaret Rome!" Who will be singing the lyrics? Bet we could come up with something terrific.

Is there a way to carry my Tablet PC on the Segway?

You might want to join the Eco group here on AR.

My best to you and Linda.

Peg...thanks for the kind words and separate emailed suggestions.  I will work on the press release ideas.  I think Margaret's thinking about selling too so she can have a Segway!  Of course, you'll both have to move up here!

Margaret...We'll sing it together in 2-part harmony.  Yes, there is a way to carry your Tablet PC on the Segway.  I'll get some pix to you.  And thanks for the tip about the Eco Group...I will look into that.  The Segway gets the energy equivalent of 450 miles per gallon!

Your friend...Jay

Jay, I can just see you on a listing with the Segway. How do you secure it? If I saw one, think I might be tempted to take it for a ride. Thought this was interesting.  http://www.tlb.org/scooter.html

What has two legs and two wheels? Jay on a Segway!

Margaret...The second generation Segways have an alarm that should keep, as they say, the "honest" people away.  Also, the key is wireless and makes note if the Segway alarm goes off (if it is moved in any way).  Failing that, it's the old lock and chain method for complete security.  Thanks for the riddle!

Jay, I ADORE the photo with the Beatles on Segways.  Just excellent!  How is the promotion going?

Peggy...The promotion is just starting and already attracting a lot of attention.  The response from those of the public I speak to is very positive.  Of course there are naysayers from the real estae community (competitors), but they clearly are unwilling to make a similar investment in such a "green" project.  I'll keep you posted.

Great idea, Jay! Be sure to include a photo of you on the Segway in your marketing materials. Then add photos of each client who gets a Segway at closing. Have you talked to the manufacturer or distributor to see if they'll give you a wholesale discount?

Hi Sharon...Yes, I have made arrangements with the Segway dealership to help the costs, which run about $5,000 per Segway.  I can't wait to give my fisrt one away and for the photo shoot opportunity you suggested.  Thanks for stopping by the blog!
