Professionally Preparing Problematic Pictures -- Picking Picasa or Picnik?

Okay fellow ActiveRain members...I need your help!

One thing that we can all agree on is the critical importance of high quality pictures for MLS photographs and Real Estate Staging portfolios. I am in no way, shape or form a good photographer. And I get easily overwhelmed with the multitude of options available with photo-enhancing software. I long ago left PhotoShop, never quite mastering it. For years I've used ancient versions of Microsoft Office Picture Manager and Paint Shop Pro 7 that are on my PC (sorry, not Mac). My proudest achievement was learning how to straighten my always-crooked images so that the room no longer appears to be sliding into a sink-hole (Eeeeeewwwrrrrrrrrr...THUNK!).

I have so many pictures from projects that I loved...but the pictures aren't blog-worthy, much less up to the level of my business web site.

Lately on ActiveRain I've seen a lot of mentions about Picasa and Picnik software to enhance and modify visual images. I've tried to weigh the options...but my eyes quickly glaze over. And their web sites give me a bit of sensory overload. I just want something that's going to be dazzlingly effective with my mediocre digital photos -- while straightforward enough for me to use without getting exasperated.

Just a simple question for those of you who have worked with them...Picasa or Piknik?

** UPDATE **

To follow up on this saga, I've posted a new blog to tell you the results of my decision based on your feedback: EUREKA! Progress Professionally Preparing Problematic Pictures in Picasa! Part II.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Leslie,

I have used both but I prefer Picnik.

Kathy -- Thank you so much, that's exactly the kind of explanation I was looking for. After my slogging through all the blogs and online tutorials, you summed up the software functions and benefits in just three sentences. You're awesome!

Ginger -- I appreciate your honesty in saying that the software will only go so far with mediocre pictures (those would be mine). Alas I was hoping for miracles...but I'll be happy with improvements! Thank you also for your offer to help...I'm always amazed by members of this community reaching out in support.

In the past I've looked into software that has so much complexity that I got overwhelmed. While my husband kept talking about all the things the comprehensive software could do, I knew that I was likely to focus on a few helpful tools, disregarding the rest. Bottom line, I need a photo editing program to be effective and INTUITIVE!

Leslie - I've never used Piknik (maybe I should take a look at it) but do use Picassa for each house.  I like the ease of use and I think for most photos it does a good job.

I use Picasa all the time, and it can improve on some of my boo-boos. I love the straighten option, and there is also a sharpen option that helps. I study home magazines to try to learn a little about framing the shots correctly.  When all else fails, I call my freind who can photoshop a particular problem for me.

On this subject; I've  used Picasa a little; but do have one question if anyone can answer it: Is there a way to change the DPI (not just the "size") of pictures on Picasa? I can't find it! Thanks in advance! Sorry Leslie, I've never used Piknik.

Melissa -- Thanks so much for your feedback. With your vast staging experience and strong visual presence though blogging and newsletters, I trust your opinions!

Kay -- Good point about studying home magazines for ideas on framing shots. You're right, it's a completely different technique than MLS photographs where the point is to get as much square footage in the shot as possible. Staging photos need to be a bit more nuanced.

Peg -- Thanks for the Picasa question. If I choose this software I'm sure I'll be looking for the same answer soon...

Leslie ~ I use Picasa and find it super easy to navigate!  And, it's free.  I use several of the features But "crop, straighten, lighten, sharpen" are the ones I use most often.  Good luck!

I love Picasa.  They added a feature for lettering not too long ago, but they do not have ALL the bells and whistles of Piknik.  I have tried Piknik, and it doesn't seem terribly complicated, but I haven't given it a full try, because I love Picasa!

Maureen -- "crop, straighten, lighten, sharpen" sound pretty straightforward to me! Of course the current software is so much simpler to use than the original photo enhancement software. It looks like the technology is moving forward in sophistication and ease of use (a good thing), while still focusing on those four basic skills. Thanks for your comment!

Hi, Allegra! Actually I'd probably be bopping along to my old software if it weren't for all the AR discussions about designing and customizing blog headers. The more you read the more you see these things popping into view. Just yesterday I received a Picasa slide show of photos taken at my daughter's school production of "Fiddler on the Roof." Got me thinkin'...

Cathy - What provoked you to move from Picasa to Picnik? Were there features that were missing that you needed? Or was it ease of use?

Hey there, Andrew! You see, now that your blog has raised the bar for quality pictures here on AR, we all want our staging photos to look as great as yours!

Thanks for your feedback about using both software packages, Cheryl!

I feel your pain, Cindy! But as I'm reviewing photos to update my (sadly out of date) business web site I really want them to look their best -- you can't re-take photos when a project has already been de-staged after selling. And quality photo enhancements can really make a difference. Not to mention that both of these packages are FREE!  Thanks for your comment!

Hi Lesie - I used to use PhotoShop but lately have been using Picasa for most of my photo editing.  In addition to staging, my company offers virtual tour services for agents in SW and Central Virginia.  We have been doing this for over 5 years so we edit a lot of photos each week. Picasa does just about everything I need.  Every once in a while I will use Fireworks or Photoshop but for the most part, Picasa will do everything we need to do.

Leslie, thanks so much for posting this question. I too struggle with photography...My pictures are always dark, crooked and blury. I just downloaded Picasa and can't believe the difference it has made in my poor quality photos...Amazing. My daughter loves Piknik but then again, she also loves to add pink highlights to her hair...I'll be sticking with Picasa.

Wanda -- Thanks for your feedback! That's a strong testament to the ease and effectiveness of using Picasa.

Kimberley -- I'm glad that Picasa has worked so well for you...it looks like my pictures might have hope after all. Maybe your daughter likes the options for self-expression on Picnik. I appreciate your comments!

I've been enjoying the responses.  I guess I'll have to look into Picnik at some point.

I love, love, love Picasa! It has made a tremedous difference  making the pics on the MLS look better and brighter. The straightening tool is amazing! How did we live without this before? The key here is to play around with it and not be afraid. Remember, one of the best things is the Undo Buttom!
