How to Get Rid of an Old Computer

By
Real Estate Agent with Surterre Properties

One of my clients was preparing for his move out 2 weeks ago.   As we headed toward the close of escrow, he ordered a "dumpster" to be put in front of his home so he could give the 'heave ho' to a lot of stuff...

Among the stuff was an old computer monitor and tower that was too slow and no longer useful.  When the trash company came to pick up the dumpster, they neatly placed the monitor and computer at the driveway and took off with the trash.  They didn't do that that because they thought he might have mistakenly put the computer in the trash.  They did it because a computer and monitor are hazardous materials.  Computers contain lead, cadmium and mercury and they pose serious health and environmental risks.  Some states have passed laws against trashing the machines.  There are alternatives...

Here are the right ways to part with an old computer:

1) Research: Inquire if the company you will be buying from will take your old computer...and maybe give you a small 'trade-in' allowance.

2) Donate it:  If less than 5 years old and in working order...someone can do a few upgrades and find it useful.

3) Recycle it: Some computer manufacturers don't have a trade-in program but they will recycle your old computer for free, so as not to harm our environment.  Dell takes their computers back, even if you don't buy your new one from them.

4) Clean up Your Info: Remember to scrub your personal information from the computer before you donate it or recycle it.

Hi Michael ~ This is very helpful advice.  I have several old CPUs hanging around in the basement and shed.

There are lots of recyclers that specialize  in getting rid of computers and monitors.  Just google them!

Excellent information! Another possibility for a reasonably current, working computer (and actually to give away or acquire lots of re-usable, decent stuff) is www.freecycle.org. Goodwill has been advertising that they accept computers and put all the machines or parts to good use. Again, be sure before you give the computer away that you scrub all your personal data.

Thanks for the useful tips.  I trust you didn't type this on the computer shown in the picture.

That old Apple with two floppies reminds me of my very first computer, an Apple Lisa. That's an experience where I really should not have been an early adopter -- LOL.

We occasionally have "free electronics days" at our disposal centers here. Otherwise it costs money to dispose of batteries, CFL light bulbs, computers, televisions, etc., which is why you can get up almost any morning and find boxes of electronics dumped along side of the roads. It's even worse in this economy. No one is going to pay to dispose of their special trash.
