Would YOU Hire a Bikini-Clad REALTOR? How about One in a Hospital Gown?

By
Real Estate Agent with Boardman Realty Minnesota License#90858

Last Saturday, Valentine's Day, started out for me with an early morning visit to St. John's emergency room in Maplewood after my first ever blackout. No worries, I'm perfectly fine. I found out after a few hours of tests that I tend to faint when in extreme back pain but I digress...While waiting behind the curtain in a gown that opens in the back without much else on but socks, I heard one of the nurses discussing her search to purchase a first home with a colleague. Just a few feet away from me, I could clearly hear the discussion. "Looking at homes in St. Paul, White Bear Lake and Hugo....Lots of great homes on the market...(pages rustling) This one is a foreclosure...I don't really know what short sale means..."

No realtorYep the REALTOR® radar kicked in but alas I'm not exactly dressed for success in the hospital issued garb. Besides I was still feeling a little woozy after the early morning fainting spell. After a few minutes of eavesdropping, it wasn't like we could go anywhere or do anything else...My husband jokingly offered to go out and give her my card but I declined. It is hard to be viewed as a professional REALTOR® and discuss homes in your skivvies between a blood draw and EKG.

I am just not THAT aggressive when pursuing a client.

I do know of an Anoka County real estate agent that is very aggressive. I heard tales of her amazing ability to drop everything that she was doing to run over and offer her services to every car that drove up to the home she had listed across the street. I heard the tales from a less-than-impressed family that had the unfortunate opportunity to be met by this real estate agent at their car. She was sunbathing when they stopped for a flyer. The aggressive agent didn't bother with a towel but high-tailed it over, barefoot and bikini-clad, to ask if they wanted to see the inside of the home. The mom, dad and preteen kids in the backseat, were shocked, quickly declined and drove away...FAST!

I know I am a very good REALTOR and buyer's representative. I would have been able to expertly assist the young emergency room nurse to purchase her first home. I know the market and have been taking buyers to see foreclosures and short sales all over St. Paul, Forest Lake and White Bear Lake for the last several months. I may have even been in some of the homes that she had printouts for. But as a professional REALTOR®, I chose to remember there IS a time and place for everything. This just wasn't the right time.

I prefer to save my aggressiveness for the negotiations and find my leads when I am fully clothed!

Teri, first, I hope you are feeling better!  Second, you are absolutely correct that there is a time and a place.  We go to a lot of social events and I get hit with questions all of the time.  I give them my card, direct them to my blog for general market info and invite them to call me.  I want to have my game face on and it's just not possible for it to be in place 24/7.  Especially in your skivvies :)

I have to admit I would have been tempted. My stopping point would not be because if my situation it would have been hers. She was having a private conversation with someone else. Granted everyone could hear but in an ER behind a curtain to me is the same as walls.

Sally--But it IS funny because she was seriously trying to solicit real estate business and didn't realize she wasn't being taken seriously. I never seriously considered doing business but we were getting a chuckle imaging the possibilities!

Lisa--I am absolutely fine...Thank you for your concern. Weird episode or seizure...the nurses on the careline always err on the side of caution and want you to be seen by a doctor immediately. I try to change off the real estate subject as I like to hear about other people when socializing. My husband does sing my praises from time to time and pass out my cards later...works much better than "working the room" when I want to have fun!

Denise--I was not even tempted! I agree with you 100% about staying out of others conversations. It was just funny to overhear and imagine the possibilities. :)

That is one story! I hesitate to interact with clients if I'm having a bad hair day, lol, let alone dressed in a bikini!

Sharon--I agree! If I hadn't known the parties involved, I wouldn't have believed it had happened.

Lydia--I wasn't even tempted for a second! We just were joking a bit as we waited. As for the bikini clad agent, I actually know her. She's a mom with kids and I think just completely forgot she what she was wearing in her zeal for getting that next client! Something we all need to remember or we will be remembered for the wrong reason. :)

Teri, was it at least a waterfront home the "bikini agent" was trying to show?  It must have been a little tempting to overhear the conversation in the hospital and not interject, but then again, this person might have very well been working with another agent already since she was reviewing print outs of the properties.

I'm not sure how many agents in this market would show such restraint.

Hi Teri,

"I am just not THAT aggressive when pursuing a client"...I'm pretty much the same way myself.

Silvia--The bikini-agent lived on the lake but the house across the street was landlocked. There was never any temptation only joking banter with my hubby to offer real estate services to the nurse. From the conversation, the printouts sounded like they were off the internet not from an agent...that's where the joking began. We were having our own discussion so really weren't paying attention to all the details.

Terry--I think there are definitely some agents out there who would have jumped off the gurney and rushed out to start selling....NOT me but there are always that one or two that are always ready to sell, sell, sell! :)

Hi Teri - My ears always perk up when I hear people talking about real estate (no, lol not the bikini clad Realtor lol).  You sometimes find business in the strangest places.

As far as the bikini Realtor, lol it sounds like that might be a good theme for the next comedy series for TV.

Teri, I am with you on this one, however, I have had conversations with other agnets who don't care where they are or what they are doing.  They are very aggressive, and I can't even believe some of the stories they tell me about how they got a client.
