Things I've Learned On The Journey...!!!

By
Title Insurance with Patriot Land Transfer, Inc.

I've heard it said, that by the age of 5 we are almost fully formed as regards our personalities and characters...a scary thought to say the least...

My hard working blue collar parents were very frugal, but saw to it that my sister and I received the benefits of twelve years of Catholic School education...at a cost, by the way, of zero tuition...You see, the cost of our education was born by the parishoners of the parishes that supported the schools...All my parents spent was for paper, stationery, and uniforms and supplies...!

To my parents, to the parishoners, and to the teachers, especially the Good Nuns of the Sisters, Servants of The Immaculate Heart of Mary, The IHM nuns, as we called them...I owe a debt of thanks that can never be repayed...!!!

The value of my education was priceless, although I did much complaining as I was being educated...!!!

Although my family today is much wealthier than my parents, I cannot really justify the cost of tuition in our Catholic Schools, which has risen to almost the same as college tuition...

I'm not debating or questioning the quality of Catholic Education today, I'm merely saying there is a large chasm of difference between then and now...

My purpose in this post is to share with you some of the values that the good nuns tried to instill in us...

***Cleanliness is next to Godliness...

***A stitch in time, saves nine...

***A little learning is a dangerous thing...

***Two heads are better than one, even if one is cabbage...

***Self Control is the most important grade on a report card...

***Repetition is the mother of learning...

***I can stand a thief, but I can't stand a liar...

***Silence is golden...

***Parents are the primary educators of their children...

***Honesty is the best policy...

***The 11th Commandment is 'Mind your own business'...

This is by no means an exhaustive list of the things we learned from the 'good nuns'...from time to time, I will post some other stories of the 'good nuns' I will never forget...

As I said, I will never be able to repay them for their dedication, their caring, their holiness, their example, and their selflessness...so the best I can do is pay it forward...a little...!!!

Fran,

Thank you.

Except for the Nuns and Parochial school this is what I was taught.

I don't know about 5, but then I was blessed to know my Grand Parents and 3 Great Grand Parents well in to my Teens and late twenties. We are who we associate with and personally I was very lucky.

"Mega Dittos!"  Sounds like we had the same parents and went to the same schools.  No complaints here, and a lot of gratitude for the lessons learned.  Thanks for sharing.

Jim,

My only regret, Jim, is that my children will never experience the influence of the 'good nuns'...!!! Thanks,   Fran

Great post, Fran!

A couple of years ago I was in NJ ... I was driving down Route 9W and passed the Motherhouse for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace ... I pulled in and knocked at the door to pay a visit.

I had not seen a Sister of St. Joseph since I was graduated from Annunciation RC School eighth grade in 1966.

I met my kindergarden teacher ... Sister Ursula, who left for missionary work in the Philippines when I was in the first grade. Sister Ursula was my first childhood heroine ... we used to raise money for the missions and I idolized her. Imagine how amazing it was to meet her as a 50-something alumna ... and she remembered me! She asked about other classmates by name ... it was amazing.

Thanks for sharing ... your blog post took me on a special trip down Memory Lane today. I will be grateful forever for the Sisters of Saint Joseph and the Sisters of Charity. They were amazing ladies and I learned MUCH from them.

Frances: You would agree then, it is IMPOSSIBLE to repay those good ladies for what they gave us!!! And there were stories upon stories they shared with us that I wish I could remember...!!! And they knew all our tricks, too...well most of them knew...!!! LOL

Thanks,   Fran

Great post, Fran. Reading through it took me back to the small Catholic school I attended for grades 1-6. We recently were told it is likely closing down at the end of this school year due to lack of funds. My heart breaks. The values you mentioned are so simple and yet so important. It's so nice to be reminded of those things that can make the road so much easier when you base your life around them.

Fran,

I did not attend Catholic schools but both my parents did and then met at Incarnate Word and St. Mary's in San Antonio. What a gift my parents gave my bothers and I by instilling those Catholic values to all of us. Amazingly we all married Catholics and are practicing Catholics today. Five kids and 14 grandkids later they just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Well...I think there are good morals and values. In my adult life I learned stuff like...the mind is a powerful thing..nothing is constant in this world except change...no what ifs if I try it...I have no control over anyone except ME, we are all human and all have different opinions, communication is key to setting boundaries...and all that good stuff :) :)

Sally,

The good nuns went beyond good morals and values...they concentrated on refinement...they were not satisfied with mediocrity, they drove us to strive for perfection...!!! :) Thanks,   Fran

Fran, you've been reading my mail!  I feel exactly the same about my 16 years of Catholic education here in upstate New York.  I owe a debt that I can never repay for everything those nuns and priests taught me.

And I'm not just talking about the academic material, all of which I could have gotten in any decent public school. The real difference came from being exposed - day in and day out, year in and year out - to dozens on men and women who had dedicated their lives, first to God, and then to educating children.  I believe it had a lot to do with the diffenerce between a vocation and a career and it had a profound effect on me.

As to justifying the cost of Catholic schools today, I'm afraid I have to disagree with you.  Yes, now that most of the nuns and priests are gone, they are expensive.  However, they still offer what no public school is capable of offering, a faith-based education.  CCD and other religious education programs, no matter how good, simply cannot counteract all the negative aspects of today's culture which, unfortunately, are reflected in our public schools. Some people in the Diocese of Tulsa have written far more eloquently than I am capable of on this very subject.  See http://www.dioceseoftulsa.org/section.asp?secID=181, especially the last 4 paragraphs, if you are interested.

Finally, there is still one diocese in this country where Catholic schools are totally tuition-free to any and every Catholic student.  It is the Diocese of Wichita and their story is remarkable for its simplicity.  You can read it at http://www.edexcellence.net/doc/catholic_schools_08.pdf#page=22

Mike,

Thanks for the links! I am really interested in the Wichita story! I feel strongly as you do about faith based education...and I would love to see a plan implemented to accomplish this tuition free...!!! Thanks again,   Fran
