Writing on the Internet

By
Real Estate Agent with Coastal Properties Group International - Christie's International

Jeff Corbett posted today about your rights to something you've posted on a third party site. He disabled comments, but suggested that anyone with opinions write their own post and link back.

Active Rain is more liberal than most sites - and if they are giving us the exposure they do, why shouldn't they have some rights?

Our posts and even our comments are often picked up by google. So - regardless of our "contract" with Active Rain, by posting, we're allowing our writing to be public. Even on our own sites, we can delete content, but perhaps the deleted content was captured by another site that captures what was on our site at a given point in time.

When we change companies, the former franchise may demand that we remove all references to their company - we can't always do that - a site that connected us may no longer be "manned" or able to be contacted, but the connection is still out there.

The internet is a public domain - once we release our writings to the internet, we may no longer be in control. This is not meant to address plagiarism, merely the cataloguing of what we wrote.

I'll bet I am not alone in that your post took me aback a little. I really never thought about it that deeply.

Sharon, I think Active Rain is more than great with the way they deal with our content.  I love this place!

I think AR is great and certainly think they give us some great exposure. I am so glad that someone invited me here to the rain a few months ago.

This is a great topic.  I think it goes more to saying why you should be very careful what you write online - either as posts or comments.  One you put it out there, you can't always take it back.

That's kind of one reason why I don't allow reblogs because I lose control of my content!  Silly enough I allow my stuff to be syndicated all over the world.  It's a double edged sword:  I want to drink the :google: juice but I am afraid there is poison in it!

Hi Sharon, this is so well written and it clearly says what the author of the other post intended to say.

Terri - then you haven't yet tried to take something off the web!

Pat - me, too.

Dan and Amy - I'm glad you're here, too.

Charles - naive? or selfish ... or myopic?

Kathy - that's precisely the point.

Renee - most things in life have both pros and cons.

William - thank you.

You make some interesting points especially for agents changing brokers and having existing posts under the old brokers name.
