Washington State to Eliminate Appraisal Board?

By

What can they be thinking? The Governor of Washington has introduced legislation that would eliminate the state's appraisal board.  The reason?  It will save the state $8,000.  That's right, I didn't leave off a zero, eight thousand dollars.  As far as I can tell, most states don't have enough oversight...if this legislation passes, Washington appraisers will have even less.

Thanks for posting this here, Rita!

I'll note a point or two that I already mentioned to you...

What about complaints, infractions and fraud investigations? As the regulations tighten and the nation holds it’s watchful eye on the real estate industry, which department is going to have the USPAP knowledge to be judge and jury over appraisers in Washington State? The ASC does not recommend pooling appraisal boards in with other real estate state boards as Washington has proposed.

My opinion is best summed up with the last paragraph of the news story:  “I'm most surprised by the fact that this will only save the state $8,000 a year. The Washington Appraisal Board must run a pretty lean ship. From a cost benefit analysis, this seems like a huge mistake.”

Thanks for commenting Sarah.  Yeah I don't get it.  Aren't there some perks that some high end government type could sacrifice in order for Washington State to have an appraisal board?

By the way, I don't believe California has a true appraisal board.  We have an Office of Real Estate Appraisers but there is no board.  Apparently, with budget cuts, the OREA are only in the office a couple of days a week at this point.

Sound like the makings of a free for all.  Oh yeah, we already had that.
