Did you know that Illinois has more units of government than any other state (i.e., city, county, township, etc.). Over six thousand. One contributing reason may be the township governments, which are generally six miles square.

Did you know that Illinois has the highest gas tax in the Nation?

Did you know that Chicago Illinois has the highest sales tax in the Nation?

Now, thanks to Rep. Kenneth Dunkin (D-Chicago) our legislators may have found a way around the pesky Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.  If you don't remember what the Second Amendment is here you go:  A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Rep. Kenneth Dunkin

Rep. Dunkin has introduced House Bill 687 to the Illinois Legislature which would require gunowners to purchase $1 million worth of liability insurance.

Because Illinois resident are required to have a "Firearm Owner's Identification Card" (FIC) to possess shotguns, rifles and handguns, the state knows who in Illinois owns guns.  The purpose of this House Bill 687 is to require gun owners to purchase insurance that may be too expensive for many, in hopes that they might give up their firearms.

This bill is a not worth the paper it is written on.  As an insurance guy you would think that I would support any action that helps me sell more insurance.  Think again.  This bill was poorly constructed and the liability insurance that this bill would require would not cover liability from criminal acts which is what it was intended to do.

Dunkin's bill also would require the Illinois State Police, to revoke and seize the firearms & the firearm owner ID cards from anyone who does not supply proof of the liability coverage to the agency.
HB 687 is currently under consideration in the Illinois House of Representatives' Rules Committee.

I have always enjoyed hunting and look back with fond memories of my dad taking me hunting after school.  Hunting and gun ownership has been a lifelong tradition for Americans.  My son Clay and I enjoy hunting together and target shooting which has been a wonderful father son bonding activity for us.

Lets face the facts regarding gun ownership.  Statistics have shown that Americans who legally own firearms are not the problem.  The problem is with those folks who illegally own firearms.

I have been supportive of wating periods for gun ownership, gun registration, safety training and other well thought plans which address gun ownership and safety.  Last year my son Clay completed his hunter safety education and what a happy day this was for our family.

At what point do we say enough is enough?  Our second amendment rights are on trial here.

Are you still unconvinced?  Lets fast forward.

Consider Attorney General Eric Holder who recently stated "The Second Amendment Does Not Protect Firearms Possession or Use That Is Unrelated To Participation In a Well-Regulated Militia."

This is the same guy who recently said "Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,"

Cowards Mr. Holder?  I respectfully disagree....

We as Americans have long been far too complacent in our participation of "self governance".  This is another wake up call to get vocal, and let our opinions be known to our elected officials.  Then hold them accountable, until we do so en-masse we will continue to suffer the consequences of government run amok.

Anyone who didn't know that Eric Holder would revive this effort was living in LaLa Land.  He actually advocates prison for citizens who fail to register firearms even private gifts and transfers.

Of course, none of this applies to criminals who don't buy in gun shops, gun shows or gift guns from family members.

Dean,

Thank You!

This is very good, but even you fall victim to the gun grabbers lies. You repeat the propaganda IE:  "Because Illinois resident are required to have a "Firearm Owner's Identification Card" (FIC) to possess shotguns, rifles and handguns, the state knows who in Illinois owns guns." Many a fool takes comfort in that idea, but no one except the criminal has anything to fear from honest citizens with guns.

The truth is Illinois only knows which honest citizens own guns! That's scarry! If the state wants to protect us let them disarm the hoods.

Yes, I had heard that this "insurance regulation" was coming.

Unfortunately, this is only the beginning. Be ready for a whole slew of attacks on our rights. Prez BO has surrounded himself with anti-gunners all the way up to Rahm Emanuel who was Bill Clinton's attack dog on gun rights.

Scary stuff! Thanks for keeping us informed.

I agree.  The problem here is not people who legally purchase and own firearms.  Taking firearms away from law abiding citizens will not address the problem we have with illegal guns..

This is downright frightening.  The first step of real facism is to disarm the people.  My family will keep their RIGHT to bear arms. Hunters are not the problem here, we do not own illegal guns.

Good post Dean.  Unfortunately the firearms issue is not the only right where attempts are made to dismantle by legislation intended to weaken that right.  Fortunately we have conscientious citizens (yourself) who can see through this type of legislation and the real intent of it.

Dean - One reason the left is so keen on the removal of firearms from upstanding Americans is their fear if they push us to far that we well push back,

First Amendment:

Those in government must always fear the people.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Dean - I often wonder at the illogic of making it tougher to protect one's self from those with harmful intent. Gun laws do not equate to crime reduction, if anything, they increase crime by making formerly law abiding gun owners criminals. Certain lawmakers will go to any back door method of getting around constitutional rights.

I think it may be time to go out and buy some more guns.....  From what I hear many others feel the same way and gun sales have been at historic levels...

Folks Socialism is coming to America. No more do we have the luxury of remaining silent. Gun control has always been a tenant of liberals in the U.S. They now have the power to actually do something if our voices are not heard LOUD & CLEAR. Do not think it cannot happen in your State!

Michael, there have been several articles written lately regarding our move toward socialism.  Many folks dismiss this as hype but if you do look into it you may be shocked...   Thanks for your note.

People People People  We no longer have need of a free standing militia. Please look at the statistics, when; guns are in the home, guns kill those whom they were to protect. I'm sure you and your son enjoyed your squirrel stew or squirrel how ever you eat them. You could also bond with cameras. Use real cameras not digital. Learn how to develop your own film. My husband and our daughter are doing this and the results are astounding. We have the police to protect us. They would be the first ones to line up to disarm the public. They support the laws. Lets supports them and our Armed Services. Those who are trained to protect, us so we need not arm are selves.

I disagree Carol, I guess if I could have  police officer follow me around everywhere that would be great, but it's not going to happen. People become victims because nobody was there to protect them and they were unable to protect themselves. Now that doesn't necesarily mean that carrying a firearm would have changed anything, maybe just being more aware of the surroundings could have helped. Handguns are illegal in Chicago, yet that city regularly has one of he highest murder rates in the nation. Making it harder for law abiding citizens to own a firearm, be it a rifle or a shotgun or a handgun really has very little impact on crime....I've had a gun in my home for over 20 years, and it's never killed me, I'm more worried about that cheesburger I just ate.

Carol, thanks for your note.  I see that many folks delete responses when they disagree with them.  I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us all.  While I very much disagree with your opinion I do believe that blogging and this forum is about all people having the ability to share their opinions.

I do enjoy photography and used to have my own darkroom but think I will hold on to our firearms and traditions as we choose.  Thanks again.
