SOCIAL NETWORKING 101

For many, this will be preaching to the choir, but maybe for a few it will alleviate or clarify what social networking is about.  I will speak only of the sites I am using and am still learning how to use.

FACEBOOK
Picture yourself at the family reunion or a party that you or a friend is hosting.  You ask what they have been up to.  How are the kids?  How did that soccer game go last night?  Did you catch the Emmys last night? Who did you want to win? Now, instead of these conversations being oral, picture them being written.  This is Facebook.  It is simple, familiar and unforced conversation between family and friends.

LINKEDIN
You are at the office party.  You know these people only through co-workers.  Conversations take the tone of professional support or experiences.  Families are asked about, but more to try to get a little more familiar in an atmosphere in which conversation is not a distraction.  You offer support and advice for career directed issues. This is LinkedIn.

PLAXO
Plaxo is very much like LinkedIn.  My own perception is that it is easier to direct your conversation to specific groups than LinkedIn, but maybe I haven't found the key to LinkedIn. For those who don't know what a group is - you can choose to join a "clique" on line.  Commonly referred to as a "Group" in social networking, it is a choice you have to be a part of a group with specific interests.  You are still a part of the general public, but can decide you want to wander over to your clique at any time.

TRULIA
You are at your local real estate association, chatting with other Realtors.  You are at a neighborhood get together and someone asks you about a specific house, a real estate challenge they are having or about a specific house.  This is Trulia.  You can go on as a professional or as the public.  There are very popular Realtors there who will enlighten you on a problem you might be having in hopes of encouraging you to do business with them.

TWITTER
You are on the phone, about to lose your connection.  Your conversation must get to the point in a very efficient manner, so you keep it short.  This is Twitter.  Conversation is generally one-sided and reaction to the information given is not always received. You do share what you wish to share, in 140 characters or less. This is Twitter.

ACTIVE RAIN
You are at a party of friends, co-workers and relatives and the theme of the party is generally real estate, with a little personal conversation thrown in.  You have questions about a real estate issue.  You have a personal observation or inspiration.  You need to rant. This is Active Rain.  In my humble opinion, it is the Granddaddy of Social Networkiing for real estate.  You leave this party better educated, better informed and inspired.

Well, that is the long and short of it.  I hope that this has clarified what for some is mind boggling.  If anyone has some additional sites they wish to share or additions or corrections to my observations, feel free!

great explanations...the trick is to use them to build and expand your business, I'm happy to say that I've already sold a home based solely off my network of social sites, never touching the MLS....

Thanks for the easy way to explain all this.  Just emailed it to my broker who is confused on what everything is.

You hit on most of the sites I use. I really focus my energy here on AR.

Paula,

Thank you for the very clever and entertaining way you described the most commonly used social networking site.   I am happy to be part of AR ("the GrandDaddy of social networking for real estate").   Thank you for clarifying the picture with regards to all the runner ups.

Caring expertise...knowledge for you!

Terrific "guide" -- thanks for sharing!     I'm new to all of this, and working away to "make it work" for biz.

Integrity, Experience, Enthusiasm!

i've been using all of these too, to different extents.  Twitter and AR are certainly the most 'active' of them all, the most social.  I'm using twitter to connect with people locally for business, and to connect with people all over for information.  It's the kind of thing that is going to be what you make it.

Hi Matt!
Ultimately, it would be great to let people know you are in the profession, you are a nice person, you are knowledgeable and you would be a good person to do business with.  In the meantime, you get to find and develope new friends and referrals.  Not too bad!

Hi Ron!
Happy to be of help. I was inspired to do this when I attended a social networking seminar. I could tell that some attendees were already boggled because they just didn't even have the basics.

Hi Michael!
I spend about 30 seconds on Twitter and try to include Trulia in my networking, although here, Trulia is very competitive.

Hi David!
I do the same. I spend a total of about 10 minutes on all but the Rain, then I go to the Rain and spend more time than I intend to!

Hi Jerry!
I am with you...I truly enjoy the Rain.  I have made friends all over the nation. For one who doesn't travel, it's a nice way to learn about other areas.

Hi Li!
It's fun...just keep playing with it!

Hi Chris and Karen!
I am not as much of a Twitter fan...just not enough conversation.  I like Facebook adn the Rain better.
