One rarely mentioned beneficiary of the massive stimulus bill signed by President Obama this week is the window industry. But homeowner tax credits for energy efficiency might very well boost sales of windows, according to one firm. "At Simonton, we believe that the tax credit incentive that is built into the economic stimulus package is an extremely positive step in helping consumers purchase products that will provide them with long-term energy savings and add value to their homes," said Mark Savan, president of Simonton Windows. The company is planning to launch a page on its Web site to help answer consumer, contractor and remodeler questions about the credit. If you're thinking about energy-efficiency home improvements soon, here's what you need to know: The tax credit is now 30% of the cost of the improvements, up to a maximum $1,500, said Gibran Nicholas, chairman of the CMPS Institute, an organization that certifies mortgage bankers and brokers. "This means that if the improvements cost you $4,500, you would receive a tax refund of $1,500 when you file your tax returns," Nicholas said in a news release. Windows, furnaces and air conditioners that meet the necessary efficiency standards are eligible for the credit, Nicholas said. The credit will be available for homeowners in 2009 and 2010. The Alliance to Save Energy estimates that the energy efficiency measures in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 could create more than 100,000 jobs over the next two years. Over the life of the measures, U.S. carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by nearly 200 million metric tons, the group says. Other home provisions in the stimulus bill include the expansion of the first-time home buyer tax credit, from $7,500 to $8,000 for homes purchased between Jan.1 and Dec. 1, 2009. The stimulus also increased Federal Housing Administration-insured reverse mortgage loan limits to $625,500. And it restored FHA and conforming loan limits in high-cost areas to a maximum of $729,750. Read more about the stimulus, as well as President Obama's latest plan to help families at risk of foreclosure, in this week's Real Estate pages. And if your windows need updating, take another look at the stimulus bill. You'll probably be able to save some money on a purchase. -- Amy Hoak, Real Estate writer
