With the current status of the economy and many of us looking for inexpensive or free ways for entertainment, I thought a list of FREE or INEXPENSIVE activities at the lake would be just what the doctor ordered.
- Hit the Strip. The Bagnell Dam Strip where you will find a collection of souvenir shops, candy stores, arcades, and restaurants. In many ways it is a throwback to the earlier days. While there be sure to check out Dogpatch, the Shirt Shack (personalized t-shirts while you wait), the Haunted Hotel, Two Bit Town, & the Rebel Arcade, where skeeball still costs a dime. For a list of stores go to www.lakelinks.com/shop
- Learn some History. Willmore Lodge, the log building on the bluff overlooking the lake was completed in 1930 by Union Electric (now Ameren UE), the utility company that built the lake. The lodge is listed on the national Register of Historic Place and is filled with displays about Bagnell Dam, historic towns lost to the lake and the areas geology and geography. Visit www.willmorelodge.com
- Shop, Shop, Shop. Need I say more? With all the water, you might think boating is the number one activity at the lake. Well you would be wrong. It is shopping. While you are here check out Osage Beach Premium Outlets, with 110 stores, most with familiar names like Harry and David, Coach, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, Bath and Body, Gap to name of few. For more information or coupons visit www.premiumoutlets.com
- Take a Hike. Literally, the lakes natural beauty is one of its biggest assets. No place shows it off better than the 17,441 acre Lake of the Ozarks State Park. Twelve trails for hikers to explore the forests and some even overlook the lake. Camping is available and guided horsebacks rides are offered too. www.mostateparks.com/lakeozark.htm
- Take a step Back In Time. Visit the Camden County Museum at the former Linn Creek School. The rich history of the Ozarks, before and after the lake, is reflected in the Camden County Museum. Admission is by donation. www.camdencountymuseum.com
- Gone Fishing. The Lake of the Ozarks generally means crappies, bass and catfish. But Troutdale Farm in Gravois Mills is surrounded by thousands of rainbow trout. The trout are raised to be sold to area restaurants, but also attract many who want to fish or learn to fly-fish for trout. Rates start at $10 per fisherman and include the first 2 pounds of fish. Family rates are available. www.troutdalefarm.com
- Mothers Day. If you are looking for a few minutes of quiet contemplation, the Mothers Shrine in Laurie may be your answer. Behind St. Patricks Catholic Church, the shrine focuses on a revolving, 14 foot stainless steel sculpture of the Virgin Mary. She is surrounded by lush grounds, fountains, reflecting pools and ponds. www.mothersshrine.org
- The Castle. Ha Ha Tonka State Park boasts 15 miles of hiking trails, savanna landscapes, a natural bridge, sinkholes and caves. But it is best known for its castle, or the ruins of one. It burned in 1942. www.mostateparks.com/hahatonks.htm
- Go Underground. Missouri boasts more than 5600 caves. Ozark Caverns at Lake of the Ozarks State Park, Bridal Cave north of Camdenton and Jacobs Cave between Versailles and Gravois Mills are just a few. www.mostateparks.com/lakeozark/cave.htm, www.bridalcave.com, www.jacobscave.com
- All Wet. Yes folks, it is all about the water. If you are not into skiing or fishing, you need to find a beach. The lake has two public beaches, both at Lake of the Ozarks State Park. For locations check www.mostateparks.com/lakeozark.htm
Remember it is always a great day at the lake!
