Being Frugal Is In!

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Platinum

I heard someone say this the other day on TV, "Being Frugal Is In!".  It made me think about how I have made some conscious decisions to save a penny here and there.  Although I have always tried to be smart when it comes to money, I think I have especially focused on tightening the belt a bit more lately due to the hard economic times.

When at the grocery store, I always try to stick to my list, and avoid impulse buys (again I try!).  I also purchase store brands when possible (although my hubby refuses to do this on some items!).  I will go to the dollar store for gift wrap and gift bags, as well as birthday cards.

We have an entertainment book (coupon book) and often will go out to dinner with another couple to new restaurants in the book.  Usually 2 of the 4 meals are free!  We often will host get togethers at our home, asking everyone to bring something to pass, and play games or watch movies.   I have also limited my clothes spending and other online purchases.  I turned the heat down a couple more notches, and we are going without some luxury items right now (no plasma TV, new stereo/surround sound, etc), and are making due with what we have.

I could go on, but I won't!  Every little bit adds up, as my financial guru/goddess Suze Orman says!  How are you frugal???

Retired and loving life

Hi Kristen-I have to be frugal on my budget. No clothes unless an absolute necessity. No eating out. Combine my trips so I save gas and each time I get paid. Money goes into separate envelopes for each bill. I could go on but then that would take a whole post. LOL Later my friend. :-)

I'm planning to have a big garage sale and get rid of everything I no longer use. I'm into recycling, living green and supporting local businesses (even if it costs a bit more). I think we all need to be frugal in ways that protect our local economies and our planet. I'm probably going to start putting out CDs at my listings instead of paper books. It's cheaper and better for the environment!

Spend money wisely.  Example: investing in yourself first, then in cash producing assets so they can pay your expenses!  Now you have other people paying your bills instead of you.  Your money is working hard for you instead of you working hard for it.  Just a suggestion!  ;)

Every little bit saved on the things you need allows you to have more for the things you want. I reduce, reuse, recycle everything I can and, no matter how much money I have (or don't have), I will alwyas clip coupons and shop the sales.

Now about those impulse buys.....How can you pass up something like this when on the grocery store line?!!!

Impulse buy or waste of money? You decide!

Hi Kristin, I have always been frugal, don't go to the movies, or even have a dvd, HBO stopped because the special is over and I did not renew.  In another life I use to "sew" all of my clothing, but now things are so inexpensive and I usually shop at Wallmart or other discount stores for items.

I am a coupon junkie, I admit it.  I do also subscribe to the thought that "you cant save yourself rich", meaning that while I do like a good deal, I know that there are certain times when money is not the most important consideration in a purchase.

I think we all have to remember that just because it is on sale, doesnt mean we need it or that it is a bargin!  The most important thing is to only go into debt to buy a house... Avoid credit cards unless you plan to pay them off at the end of th month, and live below your means.. and most important thing that most Americans never do: pay yourself first!  Cash is king and you will always sleep better with money in the bank!
