Real Estate is Stressful? Really?!

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty World Alliance
Our fearless leader recently pointed out to us an article about the most stressful jobs, according to www.careercast.com. Stressed out?

Apparently being a real estate agent is the 5th most stressful job out there!!

Why on earth would it be so? Let me count the ways....

  1. Having someone's largest asset in your hands and relying on you!
  2. Paychecks come after a month or more of work. No weekly, bi-weekly, no guarantee!
  3. Paychecks can vanish the day before through no fault of the agent! All that work and no pay!
  4. No insurance or benefits - think that's no problem for real estate?  When was the last time you dropped a storm shelter door on your foot or visited a foreclosed property full of mold, holes, vermin, and more!
  5. Buying and selling is emotional for buyers and sellers and the agent is caught in the middle!
  6. You spend money to make money - nervous proposition!
  7. You are constantly on call.  If you're not, you may miss business! If you are, you have no life!

So why do we do it??

  1. Have you seen the look in that first-time buyers' eyes when you hand over the keys?
  2. Have you watched a brand new home be created, ready to stand throughout the ages - and you were a part of it?
  3. Of course, yes, we do it for money too!
  4. Personally - I love seeing all the different homes in the area! It's a treat for me to be showing homes for curiousity alone!
  5. The thrill of negotiating!
  6. The feeling of being there for someone during such an emotional time!
  7. The satisfaction of watching domino-closings all pull together!

For all of us out there, take heart!  The folks out there know now how stressful our job is!

What do you think's the most stressful part of the job?
Why do you do what you do?

Sheree - I think your number one point says it all.  Pam and I take that very serious and it does cause stress in ensuring that everything goes well (which doesnt always happen as planned)

Hi Sheree! We do *it* for many reasons. I truly love being my own boss and making money that is directly related to my efforts. I also love doing something different every day. Now showing foreclosures is not exciting! How have you been btw?

I hear ya! Except when I put out all the effort and *don't* make the money because something changed in banking and yada yada yada, no closing.  :)  But I do absolutely love being my own boss, though I think I work longer and harder than most of my employed compadres.

i think it's exciting to show foreclosures - you just never know what you're going to see! Dangerous, but exciting.

I've been okay.  I'm still recovering from my foreclosure related mold epidemic but the doctors think they finally have it licked.  Until I step into another moldy house that is.

Actually I think this a lot LESS stressful than when I was a military meteorologist.  Commanders get really upset when your forecast isn't right and they can't do what they had planned.  I'll take this stress anytime.

Sheree, for me the stressful part is sometimes finding that perfect piece to complete my design or getting the homeowner's completely on board with my vision. But I do it because I love it and because helping people is my passion.  When homeowners who have been struggling and are stressed because they are carrying two mortgages and are running out of money, to know that I have a hand in helping them out of that situation feels great.

Gosh, Sheree. I thought you did it so you could work with those darn home inspectors who love to kill your deals -- LOL.

Unless you're a big corporation taking hundreds of calls a minute, it's not hard at all to be "on call" 24/7 and very much still have a life. In fact, since I've been a 24/7 Realtor, I've been to the Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Scripps Aquarium, Quail Botanical Gardens, and much more, much more often than I ever was when I worked just 40 hours a week in retail.
