Carlsbad is known for many things, including its beaches, its reputation as a retirement and a vacation hotspot, and its terrific weather.
Carlsbad is also a rather cultured community, with offerings to suit many tastes and budgets.
I make that last point somewhat tongue-in check, given that most of Carlsbad's cultural events are Free.
Did you hear? FREE! Who can argue with free?
Here is a selection of some of the cultural events you can enjoy in Carlsbad
CANNON ART GALLERY
Carlsbad's city-owned art gallery is a gem, with multiple exhibits throughout the year, which often including headline-capturing national tours such as National Geographic, and a collection of head rests from Asia. The receptions provide opportunities to mingle with other art lovers, with great food and wine, and they sponsor family-oriented events for art making and other activities with each exhibit. There are other galleries in Carlsbad as well, including the Front Porch Gallery in the Village.
There are actually two libraries, one at 1775 Dove Lane near La Costa, the other at 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive near the village. The selection of books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and more is terrific. Their systems are automated (including check-out if you wish).
CARLSBAD FILM SERIES
A series of film viewings with discussions held at the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the library - this year just in January and February you could/can view "Bend it Like Beckham," "Night at the Museum," Tribute to Paul Newman," "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Cool Hand Luke," "Absence of Malice," and "Babe."
CONCERTS
There are both individual concerts offered during the year as well as the ever-popular TGIF Jazz in the Parks Concert Series held on 10 successive Friday evenings in several of Carlsbad's beautiful parks. International Guitar Night was just held at the library featuring several world-renowned acoustic guitarists (OK, so this event was not free - it was $10). Other concerts are planned for this year.
POETRY
There are poetry readings and writing workshops held regularly at the library.
Adjacent to the library and city offices on Carlsbad Village Drive. A wonderful outdoor venue to visit and contemplate works done by local artists
A fantastic museum that chronicles the history of music and instruments, with unique musical and educational events during the year.
An annual outdoor art event that attracts thousands, especially to enjoy the amazing chalk art. It's free, with lots of other cultural activities during the 2-day event.
THEATER
There is the Carlsbad Village Theater and the Carlsbad Community Theater (yeah, these cost too, but nothing like going downtown).
So we've got a wee bit of culture here in our lovely coastal town. Check it out.
