A Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well

I am sure that you are looking at the picture of the pizza to the right and wondering.....huh???

Stick with me :)

My grandfather C.D. Pryor used to "preach" about a lot of things. As a child, I would get tired of hearing the same thing over and over again.  As an adult, I can appreciate the wisdom he was attempting to pass on to the next generation.  One of the pearls of wisdom that I heard countless times was...

A Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well

So what does that have to do with pizza?  I will tell you.  Last night 2/25/2009 at 6:30 pm I wandered into the Oyster Point Dominos Pizza located at 994 J. Clyde Morris Blvd in Newport News, VA (599-3003).  I ordered a pacific veggie pizza and was told it would take about 15 minutes.

As I waited for my pizza, I watched the crew at work.  Some were fixing pizzas, others were taking phone orders, some were heading out the door to deliver and others were manning the walk in customers.  The amazing thing about what they were doing was that each person was taking turns at doing each job.  If the phones were ringing off the hooks, the drivers answered the phones.  When one worker made a mistake and burned himself and dropped an order of cheesy bread, another worker immediately stepped up and made another one "on the fly". All the while, the workers were calling out the status of the delivery orders.  There were no upset faces in the place.  Each person seemed to be happy to have a job and were even happier to do their jobs well.

As I watched this well tuned performance, I thought about my grandfathers words. So my advice to anyone reading this.....If you don't want to give your all and your best in anything you do, step aside and let someone else do it.  The next time you see a pizza remember.....

A Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well

Have a great day and

Make This YOUR Best Year Ever

Oh yes, sir, I did.  I'm up while it's still dark out so I can walk the doggies before the chickens get up.  Yes!  We have chickens and one of our dogs is a rat terrier and loves chasing the poor things.  Not sure if the reason the few of them died was because she grabbed them too hard or their poor little hearts gave out in fright.  In any event, that particular pooch is not allowed to roam free while the chickens are up.  LOL

Enjoy your day!

Words of wisdom from your grandfather indeed. Isn't it funny how those of us in customer service have a keen eye for great service and work ethic? It's a good indicator that the observer is also great at what he does. Awesome post, Leander.

Maggie.

Chickens and Rat Terriers Oh My! :)  Just kidding. I live in the city, but believe it or not, there are a few people that  have chickens.  Spounds like you have your hands full starting first thing in the morning.

You have a great day also

Leander - great words indeed!  I used to add if you don't have time to do it right the 1st time - when will you find the time to fix it?

Your grandfather was (is?) a wise man.  I'm constantly amazed by bad service.  So, when I see good service, I feel the need to trumpet their praises.  Sounds like the workers in your Dominos are, indeed, happy to have a job and are happy about where they work.  That's great!

It is certainly easier to do your job well when you actually like your job.  For me, I LOVE my job. :-)

Ah, yes, cross training. Isn't is wonderful what that will do.

There's a restaurant that I used to patronize -- they are out of business and you'll probably understand why shortly -- where the food was extraordinary but the service was extraordinarily unextraordinary. There were always so many people standing around talking while we sat there and complained about lack of water, lack of utensils, slow food, etc. The food, when it came, was so darn good that I had to go there at least once a quarter, but you know I loaded up on drinks, too.

There was one time when one of the female workers was walking around with a huge tray gathering up all the salt and pepper shakers to refill them. She had about 50 on her tray, turned around to walk to the back, and tripped over a guy's leg that wasn't there just moments earlier. She went flying, as did the salt and peper shakers. Do you know that the other ten people just stood around and watched her clean up the mess, obviously, I guess, because she had made it. So sad.

By the way, I should tell you that your pizza is no longer there. I done ate it.

"A Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well" spoken well I like that where you have a team of people and there is teamwork involved with no problem. Great work for the dominoes pizza place.

Thanks,

Kim White
