question mark

Question: How do I use google analytics with my active rain blog?

Hoping someone can help a newbie with this question... I have seen blogs where people indicated that they are using google analytics to track stats on their blogs. (I can't seem to find the blogs when I search now though)

Problem: However I can not find a way to make this work.

  • I went to google analytics and set up my account, got the tracking code/snippet and added it to my blog. Its available in the source, but not tracking in google.

  • I asked google about it and they say that there cannot be two instances of google analytics installed on the same page.

  • It looks like Active Rain is using google analytics for their own information. And since I can't uninstall their instance, it seems to me that I cannot use google analytics on my active rain blog.

Anyone know of a different answer?

Those of you who mention using google analytics on your blog.... how are you doing this? Or are you using it on another outside blog site?

I might be wrong, but I think they use google analytics on their web sites. Do a search in blogs and type in google analytics, everyone who has ever posted will be in one spot.

Search from your home page. Drop down to read posts.

I use Google Analytics on my personal website and blog only, not ActiveRain.  Unfortunately I don't know how to set it up on the AR blogs.  Sorry.

Missy - thanks for sharing where to search.

Amy - thanks for the update

Just a general update... I did some more searching in blogs that discuss 'google analytics' and I can't find any with examples of using google analytics on their blogs. I only find examples of people using it on their own personal sites or outside blogs. Guess when I read through initially I just assumed that people were using it on their blog here, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

hmmmm, darn. I may have to check out statcounter. That may work instead - as long as my blog doesn't get too much traffic :)

Hi, Angie.  I just discovered this post when I was searching for Google Analytics articles while preparing a blog entry of my own.  I use www.mybloglog.com to view the analytics for my blog on AR and Google Analytics for my main website.  Google is free, and mybloglog is free for the basic version and only $25 a year for the upgraded version.  Both are extremely helpful in letting you know who is visiting your site and what they find most interesting.  If you do a search on blogs just type in "analytics" and you'll find the info, and I know Kristal Kraft just did a post in the last couple of weeks on mybloglog.  Good luck!

Thanks Betsy - I didn't realize mybloglog was for analytics. I just thought it was the rolling display that people are putting in their side bar of who is on their site... I will check it out.

Angie,

I was just doing a search and not logged in. Having the same problem, no data recorded.  The mybloglog is not as extensive as analytics.  http://activerain.com/smith3gary

I had the same question today.  I installed the code but it's not tracking.  It works on my website and my personal blog but not activerain.

Thanks, Betty, for the information on mybloglog.

Hi Angie,

AR uses Google Analytics on their pages. If you want to know if a website uses google analytics, simply look at the bottom left hand corner of your screen when a page is loading.

For example when you load active rain you will see Active Rains URL flash, then you will see Google Analytics URL flash alternatively.

Hope this helps out a bit!

Hi, Angie!

I read about this a few weeks back but I can't find it.  I think it doesn't work on our blog here on AR, but on outside blogs and websites only (for now).  Hopefully you get a definite and more informed answer after the holidays.  Happy 4th!

A note about the answer to this question.... (I should have posted this earlier)

I contacted google directly about this.

Google analytics can only be used one time on a web page. Since Active Rain uses google analytics already on the page (for their own purposes) - we are not able to use google analytics on our blogs here at AR. You have to use some other service.

I started using statcounter. Some people use mybloglog.

Hi Angie:  Well you just pointed out something new to me.  Google analytics.  This is the first I've heard of it and I'm sorry I can't help you but instead, you've helped me.  Now, I will find out all I can about this topic.  I was hoping I could be of help on this topic.  Great question and I'm so glad you asked.

Donna - google analytics is really great! Definitely check it out. It is completely free for under 5 million pageviews.

Angie,  Just found this post.  I've got MyBlogLog installed, but I don't see any metrics on it anywhere.  Is there a special place to look for them?

Hi Kelle - I'm not familiar with mybloglog. I haven't used that one. I usually just see it on the sidebar under people's profile.
