MySpace networking - just isn't AR, is it?

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Moline Realty 40022101

I have been MySpace networking for months upon months.  Before I was even licensed, I was making friends "in the biz" on MySpace.  But has it helped?

I've gotten a few leads off of myspace.  They have been cold leads, but they are still some.  I just maintain my presence, helpful attitude, and girly layout.  I blog, I add more friends, I comment for birthdays.  Somehow, however, I find I would rather spend my time on AR.

AR gives me rankings in google searches, knowledge, opinions, and fun.  I have become spoiled, looking no further than blogs for marketing ideas, advice on farming, and friendships.  Have a problem?  Need advice from "seasoned" agents when my broker isn't around?  Blog it!

I'm now in charge of the RE/MAX Select MySpace page, too, along with trying to introduce AR to the "older" agents in the office.  (They said it, not me!!!)  I'm not sure that the company page is going to pay off.  I'm not sure how to kick it off.  I have added tons of people locally to my personal page - do I really want to pester them with another page for the company???

Any thoughts, ideas, comments???  There are things I've seen that I like, but I'm not sure how well they work.  Anyone have a MySpace/Facebook tip that works for them????

I think Active-Rain is a much better way to market yourself for purely business purposes than My-space.

My advice on my-space, what has mildly been successful for me, is to post a Real Estate Topic (which then can be viewed and read by all your friends, at least once a week.  I tend to like to give them useful information & insight rather than blatant advertising which is done wayyyyyy to often.  Good luck Joslyn!

I haven't harnessed My Space very well.  I've been spending my "E-Time" (for lack of a better term) on Active Rain.

Joslyn,

I think AR is a much better way to spend your time.  I'm sure having a page on myspace or similar won't hurt ya, but I would definately sow my seeds here on Active Rain rather than Myspace.  Myspace gets a little spammy, imho.

Enjoy your weekend!

Yeah.  I'm always afraid that I will be looked at as just that - a spammer.  I wish people happy birthdays, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm better off just having a presence for the people who ARE looking.

Thanks for the opinion!!!

Both are good- but far different....on active rain- you are here to be a real estate professional...on myspace you're a person who happens to be a real estate professional. I take AR/localism as a business now type of self-promotion- education, etc......my mspace friends are just like any other type of farming- it might be a year or 5 before those folks need anything...but when they start thinking of Realtors to help them- they may very well thik of me.

Joslyn- I don't network with other Realtors at all on my myspace...that's what this forum is for (to me). Myspace is really where I'm planting seeds for the future..maybe it works- maybe it doesn't....but the FREE try is worth it to me.

Yeah, the FREE part is what I like about it, too.

I also run a music instruction business, which I have a myspace page for, and I've had a lot of positive feedback from that.  So when I became an agent, I thought it was worth a shot.  :)

MySpace is free marketing and anyone who isn't using it is missing out - MySpace is not just for teenagers anymore!  I've gotten quite a few leads from MySpace.  I also use a free friend adder to add people in my zip code.  It works.  Check me out and let's be friends!

Myspace is great.........for social networking.  I wouldn't bother with conducting real estate on it.  If you get a lead or two, that's wonderful.  It won't be the norm though.

Active rain is more appropriate to market your self and business because myspace is just social networking for people looking for lovers and other stuff that has nothing to do with real estate, but if it works for you stick with it.

Tchaka- depends on your market and how you run your myspace....I live in a smaller rural area- it's been decent for me. You have to look at it like any time of farming- might only get you a lead or two....but if you can be guaranteed 2 years per year for the next 5 years FOR FREE- don't you take advantage of it?

Paul- sounds like you're poo-pooing the myspace idea without giving it a shot. I have no doubt that active rain/localism will yield higher and better results...If consumers get here- they're looking for real estate help of some sort. Myspace isn't really a place to look for lovers- it's a place for friends...I've reconnected with many folks I'd lost touch with over the years and made some new local contacts...now have a free means of marketing to them and linking them to active rain and my website.

Don't really care for MySpace, but to each their own. I really do like AR, and am very happy that I have found this site. It is very informative site, with a of experience behind it. I haven't found MySpace to productive in networking real estate.

Liane-  Where did you get the free tool to help you add friends?  I'm having a hard time trying to manage my page, the company page, and possibly my broker's page, too (he wants one).  It's hard trying to add tons of friends to 3 pages!

Tchaka- Like I've said, I have gotten a couple cold leads - but I've heard great success stories about myspace networking from other agents.  How do they do it????

Paul - It's a fun place.  Networking???  I'm not so sure....

Jim- I have kind of the same ideas.  If someday down the road they decide to buy, who are they going to think of first?  Probably the girl who is leaving them "happy birthday" comments!  :)

Cindy and James - I am very passionate about AR.  I have nothing but happiness and success from it.  This is where I've gotten leads - and I plan to keep it up!

Thanks for the comments!!!

Joslyn- no doubt about it.....like I've told anyone that will listen; AR is where I go to network with professionals and put my craft out there for the interested public. Myspace is just like the coffee shop- say hi to a few people~ maybe get to know the regulars....but have my face and brand in front of people either way so that when the Realtor topic comes up- they possibly think of me.

Great comment, Jim. I love the "coffee shop" comparison.  That's what I will do!

But it's soooo true Joslyn. Read it: Myspace- a place for friends. NOT Myspace- a place where Realtors can market for free and be guaranteed awesome results by simply having a profile. Folks need to take it for what it is worth....a place where you can "meet" new people and make more contacts....
