Money Saving IdeasDue to our economic times and all the negativity that surrounds us with television and the news, it seems that it is time to take action and be proactive.

Many families are struggling to make ends meet.  Sometimes it's hard to think of different ways to save money.  It's like the old saying

you can't see the forest for the trees...

Here are a few ways to help save money in your household.  Can you think of any to add?

  1. Get rid of the Satellite Dishes and just have cable (don't need 105 channels)

  2. Get rid of home phone line and use cell phone instead

  3. Cut out buying lattes

  4. Pack a lunch

  5. Cook dinner at home and cut out eating out

  6. Do your own lawn work

  7. Turn the water heater down

  8. Turn the heat down

  9. Carpool

  10. Use Free Grocery Coupons and Mommy Savers

  11. Check which restaurants have Kids Eat FREE

  12. Unplug phone Chargers, coffee pots, toasters when not being used- Susan Hilton contributor

  13. Replae light bulbs with fluorescent lights - Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  14. If you have more than one heat zone, turn down the temp in the zone(s) you are not currently occupying.  Programmable thermostats can help. Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  15. Likewise, with more than one cooling zone, turn up the temp in the zone(s) you are not using. Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  16. Unplug laptops at night. Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  17. Turn off your printer at night Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  18. Buy fruit that is pre-bundled into bags.  Usually saves 20 cents/lb. Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  19. Use newspaper as mulch.  Tear it up, spread it around, then cover with a cosmetic layer of mulch. Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  20. Cancel your magazine subscriptions and use your library card instead. Kathryn Acciari, contributor

  21. If you are not too particular about your wine, try boxed wines.  Yes, I know, some will turn their noses up.  But before you do, I dare you to do a taste test of Banrock Station's boxed Shiraz vs. a $10-$15 bottle of Shiraz.  Then put the boxed wine in a nice decanter when you have guests! 22. Lastly, bank whatever you save.  I'm funding my son's college tuition by banking what I save on my grocery bills.  He also rolls spare change, which go into his fund.Do you have any money saving tips for the readers?  I will add your money saving tips to the list. Hi Gena, That is a great list. I especially like getting rid of the home phone. Not much need if everyone has a cell phone. Get the lower family rate on phones and cut the conversations down to save those valuable minutes.

Eating out can still be affordable if you chose the right places. A place like Soup Plantation ( with the money saving coupons can provide balanced ( somewhat healthy-excluding all the sodium in the soups) meals that would actually cost as much or more to provide at home. At least I think that is true ere in CA with food prices that are so high.

Great list! Unplug things not being used (phone chargers, coffee pots, toasters....) and reduce your monthly utility bills too.

William, I think the more people, it's still cheaper to eat at home. But with coupons and perhaps specials it could work out to save a family money.

Gena, When we do go out to eat we almost always use a buy on get one free coupon. Can be quite a savings but I agree, not the same as eating in. Great list.

Gena - great list on how to conserve money. I also unplug chargers, toaster, etc to save on electric bill. And we are definitely eating in more often now.

Gena, wonderful ideas.  I love to save!  My husband is an energy engineer/manager and has taught me the following tricks:

- Install compact fluorescent lights - everywhere.  They are available in both white and yellow light shades to go with the ambience of your rooms.

- If you have more than one heat zone, turn down the temp in the zone(s) you are not currently occupying.  Programmable thermostats can help.

- Likewise, with more than one cooling zone, turn up the temp in the zone(s) you are not using.

- Unplug laptops at night.

- Turn off your printer at night.

In addition, I offer the following tips:

- Buy fruit that is pre-bundled into bags.  Usually saves 20 cents/lb.

- Use newspaper as mulch.  Tear it up, spread it around, then cover with a cosmetic layer of mulch.

- Cancel your magazine subscriptions and use your library card instead.

- If you are not too particular about your wine, try boxed wines.  Yes, I know, some will turn their noses up.  But before you do, I dare you to do a taste test of Banrock Station's boxed Shiraz vs. a $10-$15 bottle of Shiraz.  Then put the boxed wine in a nice decanter when you have guests!

- Lastly, bank whatever you save.  I'm funding my son's college tuition by banking what I save on my grocery bills.  He also rolls spare change, which go into his fund.

Thanks,

Kathryn

Barb, those coupons when deciding to eat out, certainly do help save some money. We always need to remember though, that when leaving a tip, it should be based on the full amount prior to the coupon.

We got rid of cable because we barely watch tv and are more likely to rent movies on the weekend.  Who has time for tv anyways?

Hey Pretty Lady...

I saved a ton of money when I stopped drinking wine, especially when out to dinner, the wine bill was more than the food bill.  Of course I had a lot more fun then :).  Thanks for the tips.  Hughes L

Hi Gena - you've been missing in action around here.  I can only hope you're so busy that there's no time for blogging in the rain, or you're on a terrific vacation with no technology!

Georgina, best Maui Realtor... glad to be missed.  Working hard with this real estate market. Had to reschedule what time I do have and focus on promoting my own SEO with my own personal blog. Do miss the camaraderie and which there were 48 hours in a day but duty calls. The Short Sales and REO's are keeping me quite busy.

But a terrific vacation does sound appealing!

Miss the old gang...now what is new (in Active Rain) will become old...(not sure where that leaves the old gang)
