Do your fingers have a mind of their own?

fingers on a keyboard

I have noticed something rather odd and disturbing lately.  When I go to proof read my posts or comments I find some very weird errors.  For instance, when I meant to type "must" instead I find "much".   Time and time again I am now finding less of the typical typos and misspellings and more and more words that have been completely replaced with other words that either change the meaning of the sentences or render them useless.

So, I ask you, do our fingers have a mind of (I just wrote or) their own as they type away at the key  (I just wrote keep instead of key) board?  Is our subconscious taking over as we write?  Or is it muscle memory?

The only other explanation I can give is that since we type pretty fast, perhaps our fingers (I just wrote figures) take over after the first few (I just wrote fire) letters and complete the word with the most commonly use word (I just wrote work) they type.

Usually I correct my mistakes so quickly that I don't notice how many times things happen like they just did above.  It is amazing when I actually stop and note all of my changes how many there are.

I 'm just curious if I am the only one that has this problem...it is just too strange!

Guilty as charged-I think sometimes my mind is thinking faster than my fingers.

Hi Diane, You are not alone! I type the strangest things, and spell check is my best friend. Of course if it is a real work word I typed, spell check does not pick it up and I look like a fool! I type some interesting things. For instance, almost every time I type the word G O U R M E T I type gourment. Go figure! And, I lvoe live in New Milford, I almost ALWAYS type New Miflord. Or the word hospital.  I have to type that slowly or I will type HOPSPITAL every single time! Interesting. I don't know if my fingers have a mind of their own, or if I just am careless, type to quickly, or am subconsiously thinking faster than I realize and my fingers are struggling to keep up! But you did raise an interesting point. It also might come from years of AIM, not using caps, not caring what I type, just getting the words out as fast as possible.

Or, how about this? Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer inwaht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae

I am NOT spell chekcking checking this... :D

Diane, Spelling was always my forte, but now I have to remember to use spell check on my comments, because of my wandering fingers (or maybe my wandering brain???)  When I don't spell check, when I revisit, I find mistakes.. AR please let us edit our comments without time limits!

That's because your brain is going too fast for your fingers.  Look at it this way.  Better to have that than have your mouth speak before your brain has thought about what to say.  That could be very embarrassing.

Diane, Believe me, you're not the only one :)  When I do a spell check what I've typed comes up ok....because they are other words.  All too often I find my mistakes after it's already found it's way to Google :(

I also have the same problem misspelling the same words over and over. Sometimes I am thinking of the next word as I am typing and combine the two.

Yeah, Diane I just did the same thing yesterday! I typed 1-5,1-5 instead of 1-6, 1-6 and I didn't even notice it! So weird. I think we are thinking faster than we can type and from head to fingers just comes out misfired sometimes....too much to do on my plate I guess!
