I know you may have read my other post about the Brecksville Broadview Heights Middle School and High School Orchestra night, and if you did, you will know how much we enjoy the fact that this music program exists in our fine school system. The other tremendous opportunity that I want to write about is the Orchestra program offered at Baldwin Wallace college, a private college in Berea, Ohio, about 15 miles from Brecksville via the Ohio Turnpike.
Our daughter enrolled in the spring strings program last year. She went through the audition process and was entered into the second level (there are four levels) orchestra. They meet once a week. It was a marvelous experience for her, playing with kids on her same level from throughout the area. She loved it. We loved it and thoroughly enjoyed the end of semester concert.
This one semester inspired her to want to enroll in the week-long summer program. The program is held on the Baldwin Wallace campus and is for both commuters and residents for the week. She was a resident and stayed in the dorm for 5 days with a roommate. The instructors for the five orchestras come from all around the region and the students as well. What an experience—our, then 11 year old, daughter off to a week-long orchestra camp.
She had a great time. Her roommate was very nice and they got along great, the extracurricular events were fun and the food was very good. There was a lot of learning and rehearsing and, in the end, a beautiful concert. What a great experience for young people to enjoy. We met a lot of people the first day, when we dropped her off, that were coming back to camp for the second, third and fourth year!
The Baldwin Wallace Music Program is phenomenal at the college level, and this is just one slice of it at the community level. I can honestly say that I am not sure how many kinds of opportunities like this exist in other communities, but the Cleveland area sure does stand out when it comes to music and art…did I tell you about the incredible summer art program our son attended at the Cleveland Museum of Art a few years ago? No? Well… stay tuned.
