A Visit to Wine Steals in Cardiff by the Sea, California

Wine Steals wine bar and shop in Cardiff, California

We discovered a new place to taste, and buy, wine, in one of my favorite beach communities…other than Carlsbad, of course.

Wine Steals is located at 1953 San Elijo Avenue just a few blocks north of Cardiff’s downtown and offers a pleasant, convivial atmosphere for wine tasting, along with a great selection of wines. Their seaside wine grotto is here, but they have two other locations in the San Diego area – one in Hillcrest and one in Point Loma.

Wine Steals also offers a nice menu if one is inclined to wine AND dine. Not a bad place to have some nice nibbles (cheese boards, artisan cheese plates, salads, large pizza slices, Panini and more) and enjoy one of their many bottles of wine, all within a block of the ocean. If you buy one of the retail bottles (which supposedly are some of the best prices in town) they charge a corkage fee (with the exception of on Mondays). Thursday nights they have live music. There is both indoor and outside seating - the latter, of course, is best to enjoy the weather.

Saturday tastings, from 4 – 6:30 PM, are only $10 which gets you a glass and the opportunity to sample 25 different wines. Check out the consumer reviews on Yelp. Today's tasting of reds and whites was decent - the Sangiovese was particular nice but some of the other reds just did not cut it for me. The wines by the bottloe are so reasonable, from what I saw, that it makes sense to do that if you know what wine you want.

Better yet, stop by and create your own. We enjoyed a large cheese and fruit board with the tasting which was quite good, and seems to be the most popular to order, at least during happy hour.

Wine Steal is a comfortable neighborhood wine bar with plenty of locals, where you can relax for hours with friends and enjoy some good wines. Judging by the crowd there at 6, this place is very popular.

Well, if I ever get up that way I'll go...and you can have my tastes!  Wonderful info...I remember going to all those wine tasting places in the 70's.

Okay, so what's your wine of choice? I used to enjoy White Zin when Sutter Home first introduced it, but I don't much care for sweeter wines anymore. I like Pinot Grigio or Gris, but definitely whites over reds....

I wish I could still drink wine =(  Wine Steals looks like a great place. The atmosphere appears warm and inviting. But apparently, wine and... actually most alcohol, doesn't go with Fibromyalgia. It has a very undesirable effect on my muscles.

Rich - definitely prefer whites and have for years. Do not like sweet wines except occasional at dessert. J. Lohr is a fave. PRefer chardonnay but like PInot Gris quite a lot too. But since moving to CA have developed a taste for zins. My VERY fvorite is Tobin James, in the Paso Robles wine country. Fabulous. We joined their wine club so 2x/yr we get a case of really terrific wines.

Lisa - well that is unfortunate on both counts, but good that you know. Thanks for coming by.
