18 Comments on Raleigh, NC Rental Owners Now Have To Register With The City
Little government is greedy?
This law sounds pretty stupid to me. The government is getting into everything. Maybe with new government leaders the law can be pulled from the books. Vote the bums out. The intent I think may be good but the implementation chosen to do it IMHO seems like big brother to me. Hey Leesa, but we have licenses for dogs too. I wonder how many rental homes will comply?
janice - ya think? ;)
750k not revenue? Send the check to me, I'll be happy to declare it for tax purposes. I sorta like the idea from first glance. Perhaps they shoud charge much more. At some point a fsbo or rent by owner wouldn't pay and would rathe "list" it. What does Leesa think?
gary - i do agree that the intent is good. i have seen numerous occassion where a property is for rent and no one knows where the landlord is. THAT might be a good thing - the database. But to charge a fee? what is that all about? i am appalled that i have to register my dogs - that just irks me beyond belief! as for who will comply? I don't many at first until they start enforcing the fines - I can't wait to see the hoopla then!
Leesa well at least this should help to get rid of the slum lords. Of course the era of big government and big brother is upon us. I am by no means a conspiracy advocate but, the evidence is starting to add up.
Leesa - this practice has become the norm in many areas in the last couple years. And don't let them fool you - it is about generating revenue.
As for city governments claiming they don't know who the property owners are or how to contact them ... that's bunk! All the cities have to do is cooperate with county government and look it up in the tax records. But that would take cooperation that transcends government turf, and we all know how guarded each entity can be.
Reminds me of dogs sniffing a tree ... oh never mind. I'm about to go off on a tangent here. :)
greg - yeah, $750k NOT revenue then what the hell is it? the fee (albeit nominal in the eyes of some) will get passed on the the tenants. I am intested though to see how many actually comply and if the fines will be enforced.
What if they don't register? I think this is another attempt to steal money from the people in around about way. Property taxes aren't enough? Next what else? Slowly the country is being taxed to death. The answer is cutting spending not finding more ways to get more money from people. The city doesn't run efficient at all. Mail from the city still gets sent to my house to the previous owner that hasn't been living here for almost 2 years. Times that by ??? I'm sure that's not the only thing the gov. hasn't been able to fix. Instead of fixing things that aren't working and costing money, lets just get more money from somewhere!!!The system is so broke and we keep paying for it!!!
larry - unfortunately that is what it is starting to really seem like!
carol - no, you're right. they have always been able to find me! ;) seriously, though, how can they say it ISN'T about generating revenue?
WD - you are on target. spending does need to be cut and I could go into a tirade of where I think that should be. while some may view this as a nominal fee it is an additional fee nonetheless! thanks for stopping by!
Leesa - While this is certainly a revenue generating scheme, it may actually make landlords a little more accountable in keeping their properties up to neighborhood standards. We can only hope some good comes from it....right?
Thanks for the heads-up. I hope they don't do that in Charlotte....my dad will flip.
Leesa, what a FABULOUS idea! I hadn't even thought of that idea - no brainer! ;-)
craig - that is the flip side - holding the property owners more accoutable!
teresa - watch for the latest in your area - let me know if you hear anything down there!
teri - interesting - you were most enthusiastic about this from the sample that commented here. Just shows that we all have opinions!
Everyone complains about how government should not get involved BUT that is until YOU are a neighbor of some person's rude and offensive renter. Believe me, when that happens... you DO want to know who the parties are and what laws are in place to press the necessary charges. If you rent it: you need to be accountable for it.
Thanks for stopping by Kity and offering your comment! There are definitely two sides to this story.
