There's something buried in your backyard....Whoa! In my Backyard?
It is out there---constantly Working. Working when you are at work, Working when you are eating dinner and still Working even when you are sleep. Working in the dark of night and in the light of day. Working and working with never a rest.
Your septic system
It may be the most overlooked and undervalued utility in your home. But and with a BIG BUT with proper care your septic system can continue to work for you for at least 25 to 30 years.
If you are like most homeowners you probably never give your septic system a second thought. Again a BIG BUT you do need to think about what happens when waste goes down your drain. You depend on your system to treat and dispose of your household wastewater.
Proper operation and maintenance of your septic system is your responsibility, yes you Mr. & Mrs. Homeowner. Preventing groundwater polution from a failing system is priority to every community and every homeowner. Contamination of the groundwater source can lead to the polution of local wells, streams, lakes and ponds. Contamination can cause serious health risks for the entire community.
What to look for if you think you have a problem with your system. Symptoms such as pungent odors and soggy lawns is a sign of a problem. It is time to have a professional inspector check out the system. They will probably recommend you first have the system pumped and have the system further evaluated. Pumping may solve the problem; if not, the system may have to be repaired or even replaced.
To find a septic pumper look under Septic Pumping in your phone book or call your county office for a list of certified pumpers. A truck like this will pump the waste and deliver it to a hazardous waste site for disposal.

Carl, We do not have many septic systems here in our area, but there are some "county" areas that have now been annexed with no municipal sewer system. I remind them to have the system professionally check as part of the home buying process. It is amazing how many I have found that have failed...
