My last blog was about a recall, so I'll continue that theme. I came across this a few weeks ago.

Now I didn't inspect this house, I simply saw it as I was driving, so I stopped and took a picture. Though I can't be sure, it looks like the fire was caused by the attic furnace (the rectangular box to the left of the chimney).
The recalled attic furnaces were built between 1983 and 1994 and were installed horizontally. The issue was a NOX rod that was defective and started fires. The Torrance Fire Department started the investigation and the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the official recall. Most serial numbers range from 8308 to 9452 and many of the model numbers end with an "X", but not all. Consolidated Industries was the main manufacturer, but there are many others.
A sample picture of the recalled attic furnace is below.

Pillar To Post keeps the official information from the Consumer Product Safety Commission on our laptops and we print those out for our customers when we encounter them. If you have any concerns about your attic furnace, you can get the full information from the Consumer Product Safety Commission at www.cpsc.gov, you can contact a qualified HVAC contractor or you can contact me through this website and I'll email you the information.
I hope this gives you a little more information about a professional home inspection and its value. Be safe out there.
