unlock marketing secrets

I often read many blog posts and receive comments and questions from individuals wondering where and how they should focus their efforts when it comes to marketing.

Sure, I could, and have, provided you with many marketing ideas, strategies and tools throughout my blog posts on where you can focus your marketing efforts.   But as we all know, marketing efforts and their results are just as unique as the person doing and managing them - because they are truly related to your marketplace, your ability to start, implement and maintain those efforts and measuring and changing things up as necessary.  What works for one person, or in one market might not necessarily work in another.  So how can you think about marketing in a very general way and still get great results?

Think of (your) marketing in these 3 ways:

1.  Marketing is about slow, sustained efforts that build on your past successes.  It is not about creating some marketing pieces and having them lead to overnight recognition and success.  Create a plan, one you know you can commit to and stick with it for a set amount of time so that it's effectiveness and results can be measured. This is whether you are creating marketing materials, campaigns, using online tools - whatever the case is - pick them wisely so that you are not only effective in your marketing efforts but using your time wisely. Remember the road to success is always under construction.

 2. Marketing is about consistency and frequency.  Think about the consistent and frequent messages you've seen on your favorite products and services.  Not only have they stuck in your mind but these companies have built a trust and credibility with you (aka branding.)  A marketing campaign can be compared to a gym membership. It doesn't do any good unless you use it regularly - I think many of us have been there and can relate to this kind of thinking.

gym membership

3. Marketing is about hard work.  Read the opening quote again.  Success comes from putting in time and energy to your marketing plan and strategies.  That's right don't give up and don't abandon your marketing plan and efforts.  Give it some focus, attention and measure it before you change anything.  Many times failure comes from not realizing just how close we were to success when we gave up.

I'll remind you again of my post that suggested marketing tasks that you can focus on everyday to keep yourself focused on your business.  Here's the link for some inspiring ideas: http://activerain.com/blogsview/940156/Are-you-focused-on-these-simple-marketing-strategies-every-day

Now take those ideas and focus them on these 5 essential areas  of your business each and every day so that you are seeing success with your marketing efforts:

  1. Blog - did you post an informative, relevant, quality content post that your readers - both potential clients and colleagues - can relate to?  Or, if you didn't post today, did you at least read some of the posts and comment - engage with others on important topics that affect the real estate market.  Perhaps a post you commented on could be your inspiration for your next post.
  2. Your website - have you refreshed the content on your website recently.  Perhaps it's just ensuring some photos and listings are updated, post a new RE show, make sure your blog loads into your website, have a new article to post for your regularvisitors (that includes google.) EVERYONE likes new content.
  3. Email campaigns - when is the last time you sent out information to your sphere of influence?  Do you have a schedule?  Do you have certain topics that you have covered in your campaigns - anything you haven't yet?  Do you follow-up with clients on what you've sent?
  4. Social Networking - do you "check in" on these sites in which you hear everyone talking about and saying they are getting business form or do you simply just have a profile set up?  Just like my reference to a gym membership - it won't do anything unless you use it.  Make a schedule - check in each morning for 15 minutes, lunch time, end of the day - whatever works for you but establish a plan and schedule and stick with it - make it work for you.
  5. Reaching out to your SOI every day - are you calling a few people each day?  Or sending them a note, email or something so they know they are being thought of?  What I have often discovered is that when I send a note to a client or call a client,  I often get a note or call back saying "I was just thinking of you."  What if that's the case and they are just waiting for you to contact them, remind them, refresh their memory.  Reach out and make the contact.

Easy Answers Button

These 5 areas of your business should help to make it easy for you to get and stay committted to your marketing efforts every day.

This is not to say that marketing is an easy task - quite the contrary, Marketing is a commitment, a commitment you make to yourself, your business and your clients - every day.  The day you stop focusing on your marketing is the day, in my opinion that you have decided you no longer want your own business.

Did this post inspire you to think about marketing differently?

Did it encourage you to focus on one of those 5 key areas for easy success that can be felt daily?

Do you have a key marketing strategy that you perform daily that is making a difference?

Anne Marie - What a great post. It's all about the basic fundamentals that will keep you in business. I need to get a good e-mail campaign for all my internet leads. I spend way to much writing e-mails to all my leads I need to figure how to set up a drip campaign.

Fran - LOL - Thank you for keeping me on my toes - I hope we'll always agree on things - somehow I think that's in our cards my friend.

Pat - you're so welcome

Tina - thank you and so happy you consider it bookmark worthy.

Julie - You said it!  Exactly - just keep these simple things in mind every day and it will make all the difference in keeping you on track with your marketing plan.

Jaime - thank you - I guess I feel I have walked in similar shoes to many agents from my sales days and I took my marketing efforts very seriously since I had to - no one was going to do it quite like I would and I'm always open to talking with you if you feel that my marketing efforts could help you.

Robert - thank you and that's so true - back to the basics is such a simple concept but one that is all too often forgotten.  I agree - create a system that will allow you to use your time wisely and get great information out to your sphere.  Follow it up with some great follow-up calls and you my friend have a great system in place.

Hi Anne -- No matter how much I try and consistently perform the basics, when I'm reminded, such as this post, it brings clarity to what I am not doing as well as I should be, especially in this current marketplace.  It also validates core concepts that are easy to get lost in the shuffle when conflicting priorities interrupt one's plan.

Blogging is certainly this, slow and sustained.  There is no shortcut. :)

Anne Marie,

Sometimes I need to hear things over and over again and this post is one of those things.

It's not that I don't know, but we all tend to get caught up in the busy day. I do write notes, make calls and make comments everyday, but I will have to make my list longer, I think I will just post your 5 on my desk.

Anne - Great post !  You are so right, marketing is a commitment that takes a lot of work and time.  Your recommendations are super and one cannot expect success overnight.  Those that do are too short term oriented and can cut back on their marketing too early.  I like your 5 tips such as blogging, updating your site and checking in on your social networks !  A much deserved feature !

Great advice Ann Marie. There are so many that fail because they never give their efforts time to work. As an example most want an instant return when they do a mailing. They think if someone doesn't call it was not a success. Marketing is done over the long term.

Hi Anne Marie, you said the following:

"Marketing is about slow, sustained efforts that build on your past successes.  It is not about creating some marketing pieces and having them lead to overnight recognition and success"

It can though! If you focus on content and seo, each blog post can become an overnight sensation. Usually, however, the slow sustained method works best and creates longevity for the blogger. It does afterall come down to repetition and routine. The most important aspect people should get out of your article is the word "Consistency". It doesn't matter if you blog for 3 months or 30, but what does matter is doing it consistently without any let up. You can achieve giant success in a matter of 2 months if you blog hard enough. But you can also lose it in a matter of 15 days(when the google robot returns) if you stop your routine.

Again, this is not surprising that your post is featured as you are an incredible writer and well educated as a virtual trainer. You deserve much praise Anne Marie!! Keep up the good work

Sincerely, your #1 fans.

I also think it is important to contact your SOI with specific marketing to their needs.  I lost a client last month because they didn't realize that I could help them refinance.  They thought I only did the purchase side of mortgage loans.  I send our holiday greetings but never anything about my services and what they are so that client slipped right thru my fingers.

Thanks for the great post.

Hello #1 - You are correct by focusing on those areas it can happen and I was speaking mostly to those individuals who are just starting out and need to get the basics down before taking it to the next level like you guys have.  Consistency is the key to overall success whether it marketing efforts, blogging, social networking, staying in contact with SOI and sticking with a marketing plan and routine - I could not agree with you more.  Thank you for your unending support of my message and the services I provide - it's so nice knowing that I have both.

Eileen - yes, so true- we all do know the basics and sometimes just need the inspiration and a different way of looking at it  - thank you!

Kristina - Excellent point- make sure you stay in front of your clients or you do run the risk of them not knowing that you can still be of assistance even after their initial transaction is done.  Thank you!

Laura - thank you and I agree - I see that too.  It's hard because there are so many tools and resources available to us that we think "I need that" and they don't realize they already have something that just needs to be worked on a bit more, tweeked or just given some attention for it to work.

Nancy - How nice - so happy that it was all that for you.

Kimberly - thank you and I do try to write for both groups and happy you found it so helpful.

Hello #1 - You are correct by focusing on those areas it can happen and I was

speaking mostly to those individuals who are just starting out and need to get

the basics down before taking it to the next level like you guys have.

Consistency is the key to overall success whether it marketing efforts,

blogging, social networking, staying in contact with SOI and sticking with a

marketing plan and routine - I could not agree with you more.  Thank you

for your unending support of my message and the services I provide - it's so

nice knowing that I have both.

Eileen - yes, so true- we all do know the basics and sometimes just need the

inspiration and a different way of looking at it  - thank you!

Kristina - Excellent point- make sure you stay in front of your clients or you

do run the risk of them not knowing that you can still be of assistance even

after their initial transaction is done.  Thank you!

Laura - thank you and I agree - I see that too.  It's hard because there are so

many tools and resources available to us that we think "I need that" and they

don't realize they already have something that just needs to be worked on a

bit more, tweeked or just given some attention for it to work.

Nancy - How nice - so happy that it was all that for you.

Kimberly - thank you and I do try to write for both groups and happy you

found it so helpful.

JB - Thank you!

Linda - Awesome - so happy that I could give you some ideas for updating.

Jason - Thanks my friend - and yes, I've seen it happen to some agents -

terrible really.  I know you will tackle this just like everything you do with

great focus, attention and style.

Christine - So happy that I can keep hitting the message home :)

Roland - you're very welcome.

Kerry - thank you and yes, your experience is all too true for many and a

great reason to see why we should stay in touch with our SOI.

Jason - thank you and just happy that so many have found my words helpful

and inspirational.

was helpful to you.

consistently doing it.

Hi Amber - how nice - and yes, having these 3 reminders of the basics will

help anyone stay focused.

Russ - you're so welcome.

Randall - thank you - to me it's the basic things that bring the greatest

rewards.

Lisa - so true - those simple reminders are sometimes exactly what we needed

to get things moving in the right direction.

Dorie - Agreed - practicing the basic fundamentals will take you very far and

thank you!

Laura - that's awesome that you are so committed in all regards - way to go!

Missy - thank you - coming from you that means a lot!  It's funny isn't it

that sometimes we get away from things and doing it can truly bring great

results.  I hope it does for you - there are always so many reasons to get in

touch and stay in touch with clients - you just proved that!

Connie - Great!  I love when someone mentions something they're doing and

someone says "I have to do that"  Reminding one another of the basics is

simply awesome.

Gaye - you're so welcome and happy I could provide the helpful reminder.

Lisa - you're so very welcome.

Marian - How nice - I really appreciate that my words will be shared with your office and hope that it provides great tools for success for them.

Walter - this is true - marketing efforts don't always need to cost a lot of money but they do take an investment of time and it's well worth it.

Brien - thank you!  Happy to hear you're putting a lot of effort into many of these areas - yes, get on that SOI area.

Patricia - so happy my list was helpful to you.

Kris - LOL - so true - no magic bullet but focusing on these key areas will be hitting the target.

Albert - You're so welcome and yes, it's making these logical choices a habit every day.  Now that you have the inspiration - here's hoping you find the time.

Pippa - so great to see you and you're welcome for the kick - hope it didn't hurt too much?  Wow, I made your mirror?  How nice - wishing you great success in all you do.
