Hurricane Preparedness....Part 3

This is part 3 in my Hurricane Preparedness series...

6. BOOK A HOTEL EARLY

If you are planning to evacuate, you need to plan ahead.  Every county has shelters available, so that is always an option.

I start watching the storm early on and scout out 2 or 3 possible locations away from the storm.  I have pets, so I need to stay in Pet-friendly hotels.  The Amerisuites chain is always my first choice.  They are pet-friendly and kid-friendly! I book rooms in several places for 7-10 days and then make adjustments for time and location as the storm approaches.  By the time the storm is 3 days out, most of the hotel rooms in the state are already gone.

7. PETS

Have travel supplies ready for your pet, too.  I have a cat and a sweet, Ab_beylittle Yorkie who only barks when she is in a strange place, like a hotel room.  A barking dog in a hotel is not very welcome, so she has a muzzle. She can drink while she is wearing it, but she doesn't bark and she won't disturb anyone.

Jackie - I'll bet you were about as happy as I was to see "Andrea", the first named storm, popping up in early May!  Here in Port St. Lucie, on the other side of Florida, we really got a beating in 2004 with direct hits by Frances and Jeanne and lots of rain in between those two from Ivan.  Everyone seems to be better prepared now having been through that.  However, there's always a problem in Florida because we get so many new people moving into the state each year who have never been through a hurricane before.  Thanks for your Hurricane Preparedness Series.

PS - I have a Yorkie too, named Rhett Butler. My Yorkie

Elizabeth:

I really hope Florida is spared this year...I evacuated for Charley, Frances and Ivan...and stayed home for Jeanne, which was really just some minor wind in Tampa. But, Jeanne blew out the transformer on my block and caught my electrical lines and phone lines on fire. The surge blew out everything that was not surge-protected and I left the house at 3 am thinking my house was going to burn down...after I had been so worried about flooding for the previous 3 storms.  The fire dept was there in minutes and the fire was quickly extinguished, but I was without electric for more than 10 days. It was horrible!

This series was very easy for me to write, because of my personal experiences. I don't understand people who don't take these storms seriously.

Rhett is adorable!

Jackie - best of luck with the hurricane season. You guys all need a really, really long break from that kind of excitement....  (Do your kids remember that evacuation, btw?)

My oldest children remember the flood and the fire in 2004 is still very fresh in their minds. Now, when there is the slightest windstorm, I can barely sleep and am seriously considering buying a generator this year.
